Model 12-2 and a Tyler T-Grip
Does anyone know if a Tyler T-Grip, or similar, will work with the narrower frame of the early model 12's? Thanks.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Yes. Got one sitting on the desk. Just get the correct size. You can trim the tabs if you like.

The grip frames of both aluminum and steel frame K-Frame revolvers are identical. The difference is in the major thickness of the revolver frame. They use the same grip adapters, regardless of manufacturer.
I don't understand why this error is so common! If you have 2 K-frame guns, one "Airweight" and one steel, all you need to do is compare them side-by-side to see the grip frame thickness is the same!

Actually the 12-1, 12-2 and 12-3 had a slightly narrower grip frame. The 12-4 made the change to the standard grip frame width of the other k frame models.

Maybe because the SCSW (4th Ed) agrees with Bushytale. The frame width of the 12 through 12-3 is .080" thinner. They go on to state that if regular K-frame grips are used on these early model 12's it will result in a .040" gap on each side.
It was for this reason I made the OP. Still somewhat in the dark. If the clip on the T-grip is made to fit around a standard K-frame how does one make it fit the narrower frame of the model 12 by trimming the clips?
Thanks for the input thus far, but I'm still not clear on how this works.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Bob, the Tyler will fit just fine except it will stick out past the frame on both sides between the trigger guard and the grip. I have one on a 12-3 round butt and like it just fine. The protrusion is about 1/32" on each side.

It fits the same because, as Alk8944 explained, the gripframes are the same. It's the rest of the gun's frame that is different in size.

Don't even mention "Tyler T", they cashed my check for 3 adapters on April 3. I called yesterday and left a message as to the estimated time of delivery and not surprisingly got no call back. If they can't provide better
service they shouldn't cash your check. Two words, "NEVER AGAIN" for these clowns. I can only hope someone who has some business savoy starts to manufacture a product in aluminium to put them out of business. I will in the future buy from Robertson (great service) or give BK a shot. I took the time to post this to both vent and forewarn anyone that is considering to place an order, be prepared to wait beyond their 3 week lead time posted on their antiquated site and endure the insults of ridiculous customer service. Enough Said!

This is what I have found as well. I have an older original T grip on my Model 12. It fits the front of the frame fine with its attachment, but there is a gap at the top around the main part of the Revolvers frame. I simply squeezed mine once the were installed and helped make it less obvious.

Actually, SCSW does not agree with Bushytale! Read what you posted yourself again! What the book says is the FRAME is .080" thinner, not the GRIP FRAME!!!!!!!! And this is correct and exactly what I said. The gap that is mentioned will be between the frame side and the "horn" of the grip because the frame is thinner. Simply put, Bushytale doesn't know what he is talking about.
Anyone who has owned a Model 12 of any dash variant knows this is correct. Here are the dimensions as measured from 2 Model 12s and 2 steel K-Frames:
Steel K-Frame major thickness; .660" +/- .002"
Steel K-Frame grip frame thickness; .370"
Aluminum K-Frame major thickness; .567"
Aluminum K-Frame grip frame thickness; .370"
The 2 Model 12s measured were a -1 and a -4. Notice that while the nominal difference in thickness is .080", the actual difference for the measured guns is closer to .090"
Bushytale has it backwards as just about everyone who ever posts (and simply parrots what they have read that others have posted) about this subject! The Pre-12 through the 12-3 has the thinner frame thickness, while the 12-4 was produced in far fewer numbers than the previous guns, had the same frame dimensions as the steel K-Frames. The nominal grip frame thickness on all K-frame revolvers is the same .370", regardless of frame material.
This goes for everyone, quit taking everything someone posts as gospel and repeating it. Probably 50% of what you read on this, or any other network forum is incorrect!!!!!!! This is an excellent example of that! Stick around a few years and you will learn which members posts can usually be trusted.

But the point is that if you are trying to get properly fitting grips, or grip accessories, the difference in frame thickness will make a difference in how they fit. Who wants a set of grips with a .040" gap on either side of the grip at the top? Granted, the difference between frame thickness and grip-frame thickness may have no effect on the use of a Tyler T-grip, or similar, but it definitely has an effect on grip fitment.
I've never had or used a Tyler T-grip, but from what I have read it appears that it is secured to the frame by placing the tabs under the grip panels. If the grip panel is not relieved for the tab, wouldn't that push the top of the grip panel out even farther?
Don't castigate, educate.
Adios,
Pizza Bob
