Default My UUUUGLY Model 28-2-Update on Post #57

I walked into the local gun store this afternoon and the owner immediately began trying to sell me on a Model 28-2 he had just put up for sale today. Appearance wise, it really looks bad, but on the inside, this gun is literally like new! Bottom line, I walked out of the store with the gun for a total price of $433.00, y'all are free to express your opinions on whether or not I got skinned.

This is a 1978 issue, according to its serial number, N52891#.

Some pictures.

Looks to me like you got yourself a good shooter grade 28. You can go out out in the field and not worry about damaging the finish. And that is a good price nowadays for an N frame P&R 357 Mag.

I think this will alleviate your fear that you spent too much. With a $433 OTD budget try to find a better adjustable sighted .357 shooter for a person who does not give a hoot what the gun looks like. I do not think you will find many. Mechanical condition as good as new is worth a lot to practical people.

On the other hand my father used to say after you buy quit shopping. Finding what you just bought on sale next week will not make you happier.

Well, I guess that ugly is in the eye of the beholder.
If that one came to me, all it would need is a T-Grip.

Not that ugly IMO. Plenty pretty enough to shoot and carry with no worries about more holster wear. I got this one in just slightly better shape for right about the same price. Shoots great and for the money I couldn't be happier.

Looks like a little surface rust. Should clean up OK and be a great shooter.

Very nice gun, with some minor finish issues. Remember that they will never make a gun like this again. No "lock" marring its appearance, pinned and recessed, a stout working gun, and a reliable partner in the woods, for less than one of the current lot.

You did very well indeed.

Best Regards, Les

What with all the flooding and hurricane damage this season I'd probably pull the sideplate and check the inside workings. Just to be safe. And at that price I'd buy it also. Frank

Shoot the snot out of it. Than if you want send it to S&W for a refinish down the road. There was a post a few days ago some one sent a revolver into S&W and for about $250 it came back like new. End of the day you'll still only have $683 in the gun.

I respectfully disagree with AJ.

There's already manufacturers whose very purpose is to provide the near-perfect truck and tractor niche gun.
Providing all the endearment that a leaf-blower would give, and as easily replaced as a shovel.
Taurus and Glock.

Even a worn M28 is too special a piece of S&W history to be relegated to that duty, and not all that easy to replace.

Just my .02 while sipping coffee.

I'd have to agree with these two quotes. I don't think the new S&Ws are that bad, but there are indeed differences.

1.) That is our God given right to disagree.

2.) Many of the newer guns will fill the bill as described. However, most cost more than this piece cost. Also I am not interested in plastic guns and have never liked copy pieces.

3.) A worn M28 is a good find. I think a special one would be an NIB piece. Remember these were meant to be working pieces. I would think most should be worn, from use. It is no longer a "collectible" to the collector crowd. Even with a refinish by S&W if will not be considered collectible.

Yes, I would use this as a truck/car gun. Would I use my 98% M27-2 as a truck/car gun?......No. However, in the condition this gun is in I would use it for it's intended purpose..........as a working gun in defense of my self and others. If that is wrong, then I am sorry.

Provided the action is in the condition you describe - & the cylinders & bore are OK, I wouldn't say you got skinned. Not too bad, anyway.

That said, bluing wear is one thing, but corrosion is something else again entirely. If not stopped, it will continue to get worse.

Personally, I look into killing the rust chemically (ospho), polishing the remaining pitting out - as much as possible, & having a nice matte blue done.

Oh yeah, smooth combat trigger fitted while you are at it.

If you do some of the work yourself, you could probably save some $$. Find a gun smith that will work w/ you.

You'd end up w/ a great "working" grade N frame - that you would never want to turn loose of!

For that money, I'd say you is a lucky ****** ******* !!!!

BTW, I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been already mentioned, but you can safely, and effectively, go after that rust with some oil and extra-fine 0000 steel wool.

Looks mighty rusty to Me. You should send it up here to Colorado where the rust stops. I could probably pay the freight.

Dave,

Whatever you do is up to you. After all it is your gun to do with as you decide. Ugly gun.......no, not ugly........well & hard used.....yes. Still full of lots of use and will be around when all of us are long gone. Enjoy the gun and have fun.

It looks like a good buy to me. I will make a great holster gun / woods gun. Truck gun too if you don't just toss it under the seat and forget about it. Most trucks have consoles or door compartments etc. where you can keep it away from moisture and salt. Probably a bad idea to leave it in the truck overnight anyways, so you could wipe it down / clean it every so often when you bring it in.

If you regret your purchase in the future I’d be happy to give you $433 for it.

My nephew has a cocking indicator Model 41,,,
he left it under the seat of his pickup for 3 years,,,

The Model 41 makes the OP's gun look like a custom Performance Center recent delivery!!

He keeps the Model 41 in his gun cabinet,, to remind himself to never do THAT again!!

I'd clean it up a bit, load it, and drop it in a holster.

I think there's something to be said for a gun you don't mind carrying and shooting. If a gun is too nice, I feel like I have to garage it, but if it's got some miles on it, I'll just keep on truckin'.

I would NOT call it UUUUGLY, I would simply call it slightly challenged in regards to finish. Ten or fifteen minutes with some bronze wool followed by an application of some Birchwood Casey Super Blue and a good waxing will have that model 28 looking rather presentable.

BTW, I have a Dan Wesson 15-2 purchased for 400 bucks out the door at Cabelas and after doing the above it takes someone looking pretty closely under good lighting to spot the areas that needed touching up. And, that was with the high polish bluing that the Monford DW's were shipped with, with the slightly matted finish of your model 28 you would really have to look close to spot the areas you touch up.

I think it is just fine. Touch up the surface rust and enjoy it. (a lot)
If the finish ever 'bothers' you re-blue it, and then enjoy it. (a lot)
Either way, you done good!

Your model 28 isn't ugly. It's just well seasoned.

A LGS actually let you open this pistol up to see the insides or are you saying after you completed the purchase?

Am I seeing the caliber stamp on your barrel of your "Pre" model 28 correctly? Looks like .38 SPL?

You misunderstood my original post S.B. What I meant was, the exterior is downright pathetic, but the ratchet, breech-face, forcing cone, etc., all parts excluding the actual exterior are nearly pristine. I still haven't removed the sideplate, but expect to find very little wear or corrosion when I do.

If I'm the one responsible for the confusion, I truly apologize.

I would grit blast it and give it a moly coating or cera coat and it would probably look pretty good. You do want to neutralize the rust in the pitted areas. Don't moly coat the hammer or trigger though.

Definitely a pre 28 and verify year of manufacture 1955, it happens that the previous owner marked with 38 spl to adapt to the absurd Mexican laws, I know it is crazy, but Mexican gun laws violate the human rights of Mexican citizens . As I say.
