The correct way to do it is to buy a 4" gun, then a 6" gun, then one to mount a scope on. At least that's what happened to me.

In theory each successive engineering change was an improvement or else why did they do it? But collectors and old school shooters tend to prefer the older ones. Go figure.

Better? No. More desirable to collectors or old geezers who want exactly what they had in their youth? Yes.
The most desirable is a dash 1 because only one has been confirmed to exist. Next would be one made before they were given model numbers, then a no dash, then an S prefix dash 2 followed by, depending on your preference, an uncommon dash 3 or a later very common N prefix dash 2.

The 28's place in life is as an economical great shooter so I'd forget about the dash number and look for the best price on one in great mechanical condition but with holster wear to keep the price down.

I am partial to my 6" 28 no dash. It is S serial# 1960. I do not shoot it often, but enjoy it when I do. It was my 1st online purchase. Added these stocks recently. Have a set of diamond targets also.
Let us know how you make out with your hunt. Bob

-2s are easiest to find. -1s are amazing, but there's only one of those that has been documented. Never cared for -3s much but they are uncommon and I would kinda like one because I've never owned one. Pre-model guns are silky smooth and my preference. No dash models great guns too....so your choice!

As you may already know, with all else being somewhat equal, the 6" seem to sell for less than the 4". I'd be perfectly happy with a -2 and they seem to be pretty abundant when it comes to the M28. The last 28 I bought (Dec-2017 for $500) was a 6" S prefix -2 from May, 1965, with original diamond magnas and was in VG-excellent condition but no box, docs or tools. I'm using it as donor frame for .44 Special conversion. Since youre looking for 6", if you decide to do barrel swap and need one, PM me.

I bought my -3 new in 86. I shoot it a lot, and have no complaints at all.

Or buy the 27's bright blue finish for the price of a 28 in a WSP commemorative. Their decorative stampings are only a tiny bit more gaudy than the Highway Patrolman stamp on a 28.

You will enjoy any of them. I really like the older models ( I have a 28 no dash) but they are all great.

I believe there is an ongoing forum of 28-2 vs 28-3

A 28-2 is the most around. I sold a 6" about 2 years ago but still have the 4".
