Cleaning Up a Nickel Finish
I am looking at a 27-2 6" in Nickel. While most of the gun's finish is good, there are two areas with "freckling" (see pix for one area). Can this be easily cleaned up?
Thanks!

I am no expert. My take is if you can feel the imperfections, (in Metal, pitting) then you will not be able to get rid of them. You can use Simichrome or similar. Should help the appearance, but not a cure. Bob

Yep, that looks pitted. I use a Dremel felt Bob and the green polishing compound that comes in a Dremel polishing kit or jewelers rouge about medium speed at first. The thumb latch looks worse but could be replaced.

I'd think there's a chance Flitz polish (or similar) could remove the imperfections but the only way you're going to know is to try it. I doubt you could get the same opportunity as I did once when I ran across a finish-challenged nickel S&W and asked if they'd let me try to fix the finish with Flitz polish before buying with the promise I'd buy it if the finish was fixable. Surprisingly they said yes. Hey, nothing venture, nothing gained. A few minutes of effort convinced me the the finish wasn't fixable and I was glad I didn't buy the revolver. The owner was happy because their revolver looked better after I worked on it.

I'm with Bob and g8rb8 on this. It looks like pitting to me and you can try to minimize the looks but you will never get the pits out without removing the nickel around them. I would try either Simichrome or Flitz on a felt buffing wheel on a Dremel on low and lightly buff the area and see if you can minimize the freckling.

Yep, that looks like pitting. As above, Simichrome Paste or Flitz might make it look a bit better, but pitting is pitting and it's not going away.

I doubt you'll be able to do anything that will improve the condition, but it's pretty minor. Any substance even slightly abrasive will eventually make things worse. After shooting and cleaning, wipe it down with a slightly oily cloth.

It appears if there are more than two areas of freckling. I.e top strap, cylinder, and frame. It also appears that a good portion of the color case hardening is missing from the hammer.
Unless I wanted a shooter grade revolver at a Very Low price I'd walk away from that one.

I agree. I do not think you can cure the issue short of having the gun renickeled
