Default NYS DCS Marked Model 10-6

Snagged this one this weekend for a song, came with the holster, speed loaders, and pouch.

From my time in/around NYS my understanding is that the NYS DCS acronym generally applies to New York State Department of Civil Service (or something similar). I'm guessing this one wiht the DC tag was a prison guard/prisoner transport piece, but I'd love to hear any more info on them.

I have no idea, haven't tried. Were there some of these that did for whatever reason?

Coolio. I was 95% sure it was a prison gun, I think I got thrown because I've not seen it abbreviated that way, the NYS websites have it as DOCS, though I'd imagine there might be some acronym changes in the decades since these were issued.

Yes there were many 10-6 revolvers chambered in (and marked) .357 Magnum. NYSP had some of them. Some were later over-stamped with a number 13.

In NY, the Dept. of Conservation Services, officially the Department of Environmental Conservation, is the agency that game wardens work under. I don't think "Environmental" has always been part of the agency name, who used that word prior to the 70s and 80s? I have seen older 1905 4th change, and then post war M&Ps, marked similar to your gun. So your gun (nice, btw!) may have been a warden's sidearm.

If it was factory chambered for Magnums, it would have ".357 Magnum" roll marked on the barrel.
That would be the easiest way to tell.

Picked one up a few weeks ago myself. After cleaning it up it has be ome my favorite shooter. I think these are old corrections guns as all of the speed loader pouches and speed loaders I have seen are marked with initials that all end in CF. Mine are marked ECF, which could be either Elmira, Edgecombe, or Eastern Correctional Facility. The one I have is almost pristine on the inner workings but worn on the outside, so it was shot very little and carried a lot. Pics of it are on this thread: Finally got some pictures taken!

A friend of mine picked one up early last week. He is a corrections officer and that is where this latest batch of mod. 10’s marked in that fashion come from. He would have preferred to buy his duty gun but that option wasn’t given to him when they switched to Glocks.
