Default Model 25-5 Markings?

I have traded into a Model 25-5 with some markings that I have not seen before. All of the markings in question appear on the left side. There is what appears to be a German proof mark on the barrel, just off of the frame. There are three markings on the frame just behind the barrel. Another mark appears just above the trigger guard.

The barrel measures 5 3/4 inches. The right side of the barrel is marked 45 Colt CTG. Serial number begins with N828.

All insight is greatly appreciated.

Those appear to be modern German commercial proofmarks... I'm guessing a U.S. Serviceman bought that in Germany while stationed there and brought it back to the US???

European countries LOVE stamping proof marks all over guns in obvious places.

Zipty6,

I really enjoy proof marks. People say; if that gun could talk. Well, proof marks are as close as we are likely to get even with a factory letter. I collect German combination guns and Mauser carbines that can't be lettered so proof marks are essential. Proof Mark's are the only way I can START to make or buy ammunition for most of my long guns.

Yours are West German (BDR) 1945-1992 updated post WWII proof marks.

Eagle Over N = Final Nitro Proof - barrel & receiver separately. Receiver is stamped heavy @10:00 (marred right wing & missing N's upright).

Wicker Basket (type) Mark = Mellrichstadt Proof House (every house has its own mark, e.g., Berlin, Hannover, Ulm, etc.).

The others, I can't help with. My guess is that the 82 mark is the individual testers mark but no bets. I don't believe it's a date mark, those are normally indicated by two letters or three numerical digits. Research the Mellrichstadt proof house and you'll find the answers.

Hope this helps and nice revolver,

Thank you for all of the great information. I also found a comment from Kernel Crittenden indicating that ahak stands for Albrecht Kind aus Hunstig.

Here is a page out of a PDF about proof marks. Hope it is useful. I think the "82" is for the year 1982. The M25-5 was in production then so it makes sense.

My rough rule of thumb is
Spread Eagles ... good chance it's a German Proof Mark
Crowns ... Could very possibly be English

Of course lots of other countries use eagles for their symbol and lots of other countries have monarchies. Hence the "rough" rule of thumb. Oh well, here is the PDF page:

1982 is a possibility. I thought I had posted serial # info, but it looks like I hadn't. The serial starts with N828 which I believe places it between 1980 and 1983.
