Default Model 60 info

I have a Model 60 that I picked up on a trade a while back. The gun is in the original box (with label) with the documents. The grips are numbered to the gun. The serial number is a R prefix (R185884). It has been shot but it’s tight. Finish looks to be in great shape. I was hoping to get an idea of shipping date and value. I really appreciate the help!

From what I can tell that gun would have been made around 1976 as for value someone else will be along.

Nice gun by the way.

Best Regards,

Kobsw

Also, there was no tool kit in the box. Did the gun come from the factory with one? Can you find the old tool kits for sale somewhere?

Congratulations on a fine addition to the collection

Firearms were seldom shipped in serial number sequence, so while it is fairly easy to guesstimate when the frame was manufactured (kobsw already took care of that), the only way to get a shipping date is with a factory letter.

It is not possible to extrapolate from when other serial numbers close to yours shipped with any reliability. I have one S&W that was shipped from the factory roughly 30 years after it was manufactured. Now those are the exceptions not the rule. The serial numbers before and after mine all shipped in the appropriate decade

In excellent+ condition like that one,(even with the missing tools) it can probably break the $1000 mark on an auction site

Wow, 30 years after! I didn’t expect the value to be that high! I think I may bite the bullet and request the letter. I think the money I invest in that would help the value of the gun. I may be wrong. Does anyone know where I could locate the tool kits for sale? I would like to add that to the box if possible. I appreciate the response!

Mine is an exception to the rules, Most of the firearms from that erea were no more than months between manufacture and shipping. occasionally there is one that is a year

The frame of mine was manufactured in the early 1960s. The revolver became part of the Factory collection and was not shipped from S&W until 1996 when S&W's British owners,Tompkins, sold off the collection

It would take the Brits to sell off a collection that was over 120 years in the making

Yes, the appropriate cleaning kit will cost about $50.

And, I think this would more likely go for $600-700; still a nice premium from MSRP 30 years ago. Enjoy!
