Just another dumb question...
How common are 4" barrels on 27-2's? I don't think I've ever seen one.

Mike,
The top one is one of the only 100, 8 shot, Model 27s that Banger's had produced in 2000
The bottom one is a from the Smith and Wesson Classic series. I have had this one for about a decade. They are still available, but I believe only in blue.

IIRC post war the Model 27 standard/cataloged barrel lengths were 3.5, 5 and 6 or 6 1/2 inch..............
in 1980 the 3 1/2 and 5 inch were dropped and the 4 inch was added.
So the 4" 27 was only a cataloged option for about 10 years..... and it was competing against the new L-frame.
Edit: I picked up a nice shooter grade (90-95% gun) 4" 27-2 (or 3) about 3 years ago at a local gun shop......IIRC still recessed but not pinned.

Cajunbass specifically asked about dash 2s which were superseded by dash 3s about 1982. Assuming the 1980 date is correct then 4" dash 2s were only made for a year or two.

That is correct, only were around the last couple of years or so of the -2 production so they are the rarest of the barrel lengths in -2 pistols. Interestingly enough the 3-1/2" actually out do them in popularity and value but the 4" is definitely more uncommon.

My Bad on that Cajunbass
I never pay attention to an engineering revision when see something that I like, so my mind often over looks the engineering revision when I read it in questions.

The 4" had the shortest production run of all barrel length (3 years) so maybe the least commonly seen (maybe the 6.5" is scarcer). Before 1978 it was a special order length. I passed on a 1963 special order 4" 27-2 about 35 years ago and I am still pissed at myself.

When S&W went to the 4" M27... it was a premium gun competing against it's utilitarian M28 HighwayPatrolman. Kind of killed their own market with that move.
My 5" M27-2 was a 1978 purchase... always like the feel of the 5" myself.

Booth of those are very nice ,I sure would not want to have to chose one over the other!i had to come back for one more look and say I'm a sucker for nickel Smith and Wessons so that would be my choice .Isnt if funny how you can see a picture if a firearm and even after a few hours it just sticks in your mind and you have to look at it just once more .I have noticed you sir have several guns that have gotten in my head like that lol. Thanks for posting and continue to do so.

Thanks for all the information everyone. As you probably guessed, I was looking at one. Well, actually I'd bought it and had it at home. I saw it a couple of days ago, and thought "3.5" barrel, even though I looked at it several times. It never occurred to me that it was a 4," because I guess I "knew" the barrels ran 3.5, 5, 6...and so on. I had it home and was cleaning it before it jumped out at me. Not that I'm at all disappointed.
It came with a presentation case (needs refrocking) and the tool kit, but no papers. I'm not sure when it was made, but the S/N is in the N762XXX range.
I thought at first it was a mismatched set of grips, but the color blends just past the backstrap and has a strip of the dark color on the left grip to matches the right that the pictures don't show well.
