Default Model 36, 3 inch bbl.

Picked this up at a local pawn shop. I have purchased several very nice Smiths at this shop and this is no exception. No bluing loss anywhere and only a slight turn line. Ser. # 97J424, stocks match and are very nice. No box or papers.

Would appreciate a date if someone could research.

Don't know what these a selling for lately; haven't seen many around here. I paid $500 OTD.

Thanks,
Mick

The “floating J” should place this as 1971-1972.

Someone else may come along and narrow the date down a bit.....

Nice score for $500!!

That's a nice looking Chiefs, and I believe you did okay, price-wise. Congrats.

I'd say it likely shipped in the first quarter of 1971.

These are awesome little shooters! There are a few threads going about them now and the same themes are reoccurring, great well balanced shooters. This is my favorite for backyard plinking.

My 3" mod 36 J frame shoots on target at 15 yards.
I'll bet it would be as accurate at 25 yds except I can't see the 10 ring at that distance. WILL NOT put a red dot on it.

I have a model 36-3inch bbl, Serial 2J2869 Must be one on the early ones
I purchased this revolver I believe in the 70's as an off duty.
Thinking of selling it, what is a good price for this weapon.

Could be. I'm in South Florida, want to sell me your 3" Model 36-0, thin barrel in fine condition for $500.00?

Very nice. If it were mine, I’d put some Pach compacts on it, load it with 158gr +p LSWCHP, and carry it AIWB. But that is me. Enjoy it.

CONGRATS ! ! ! THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL REVOLVER. I WOULD HAVE PURCHASED IT MYSELF, FOR $500......

IMHO, ITS CRYING OUT FOR A BLACK GRIP ADAPTER, FROM TYLER-T. OR BK......

BELOW IS MY M686, WEARING A TYLER-T. IT IMPROVES GUN CONTROL, AND I THINK THAT IT ADDS A CLASSY, VINTAGE LOOK......

YMMV......

Very nice. I always wanted a square-butt 36 with the 3-inch tapered barrel. Never found one and got fidgety and bought a 3-inch heavy-barrel gun instead. Great looking gun. Congrats!

I'm going to guess sometime in the 1st quarter of 1972 . . . not because I have one nearby with a known ship date . . . or that I've been keeping track of actual ship dates for floating J s/n's . . . but because I got bored one day and did some ciphering on the floating J plus one-to-five numerical digits serial numbers

IF the floating J serial numbers started Jan 1st 1971 and ended Dec 31st 1972 . . . and IF there were an equal number of “floating J-frames” produced in 1971 and 1972 . . . the dividing line between '71 and '72 would be near the 56J prefix . . . meaning a 1J1 to 55J999 s/n would be 1971 and a 56J1 to 999J99 would be 1972.

If that’s not intuitive, here's a hint: 1J1 to 1J9999 has 10,000 combinations . . . and . . . 999J1 to 999J99 has 100 combinations.

Hopefully someone who has been keeping tract of actual ship dates will come along and provide us a real (rather than theoretical) answer to this perplexing question.

Russ

retnavyshooter,

First: thank you for your military service!

Second: Congrats on finding that jewel.

I prefer the 3", either barrel.

1975; with target grips:
