Some basic tests to determine your needs:

1. Do you have a Model 10? If not, you need one.
2. Do you have a 2" Model 10? If not, you need one.
3. Do you have a 3" Model 10? If not, you need one.
4. Do you have a 4" Model 10? If not, you need one.
5. Do you have a 5" Model 10? If not, you need one.
6. Do you have a 6" Model 10? If not, you need one.
7. Do you have a heavy barrel Model 10? If not, you need one.
8. Do you have a blued Model 10? If not, you need one.
9. Do you have a nickeled Model 10? If not, you need one.
10. Do you have a stainless Model 10? If not, you need a Model 64.

OK, I'm joking. But the Model 10, in my opinion, is very close to being the perfect defensive handgun for most people and situations. And the deal you have described is just too good to walk away from (at least without another Model 10 or two).

Default Yes you need a model 10.

The model 10, known as the M&P prior to the numbering system
has been a mainstay in the S&W catalog ever since 1899. It has
been in continuous production longer than any other handgun.
(The Peacemaker came from Colt in 1873, but had a long time-
out from production.)

The revolver has been used by our military in WWII, Korea, and
Viet Nam. It has been used by hundreds of law enforcement
outfits.

For many years the FBI issued S&W Model 10s and Colts OPs.
The Heiser FBI holster, like mine shown below left, was issued
along with the gun. Crump also provided some FBI holsters.
2nd from left is an unusual model with a "trigger protector".
3rd from left is a standard Crump FBI holster.

Authorized, but not issued, and very popular with agents was
the Myres #614 Tom Threepersons, shown 4th from left.

NYPD issued the model 10 with 4" bull barrel. Jim Cirillo carried
his M&P 4" bull barrel on duty with the Stakeout Unit, where it
is told that he "put down" 19 armed thugs. Two former NYPD
cops, who shot with Jim at the range, told me the Bucheimer Patrolman
rig, shown below 5th from left, is very much like what Jim used
to carry his model 10.

When I first saw the thread I thought, “the better question is, how come you don’t have one yet?”

Congrats and don’t worry about the lack of the pinned bbl.

Whoa. That is really nice for the price. I probably would've taken any one of them, even in the shape you are describing, for that price. As long as the timing was good.

Yours is...... stellar. I'm kind of bummed I don't live by you. I'm broke but I think I would've mad an exception and just sold something pronto.

I am always on the look out for Model 10's. Currently have 5; one in each bedroom of the house. One is a 3" and the others are all 4" heavy barrels. Too bad that outfit was in SC and only had a few. I would have been all over a couple of them. Oh, well, maybe next time!! OP, great looking revolver - Congratulations!

Congrats! From your description of the ones remaining you picked the best one and you’ll enjoy shooting it. For the price you paid to include the model10 with decent cosmetic condition l, a speed loader and a duty holster, you did very well!

What type of holster was included?

Need or want are predicated on what you
don't have.

But if you have or really like Model 19s or
Model 15s, then perhaps the only real
Model 10 consideration is the 2-inch version.

Buying as some have suggested at least
two Model 10s at "bargain" prices is a poor
suggestion when the OP could own for
that price-of-two a very, very decent Model 19
or Model 15.

Well, you guys were certainly correct. I took it to the range today and was blown away with it. What a wonderful, soft shooting, beautiful pistol. The double action trigger was great, and I chewed out the center of the target. The fixed sights were very easy to acquire and use, the Magnas fit my hand perfectly and I was dead on once I figured it out. This was 30 rounds at 7 yards. The low flier was on this first cylinder. In fact, all the low rounds were within the first 2 cylinders I believe.

ETA - In fact, the double action trigger was so phenomenal, I forgot to try it out in single action!

Here's a pic of my police trade mod 10-8 the day I picked it up. It's currently at S&W right now getting a complete refurbish/reblue. It is an awesome shooting gun and a natural pointer.

I've wondered about sending a LEO trade in back to Smith for a refresh.

Is there a set price range for the refurb/reblue?

They'll send you a Fedex shipping label free of charge and the reblue costs $220 plus the timing was slightly off so the total cost was $248.00. They did ask me if I wanted to keep the PD parking's on the frame which I told them no. so they did advise me that they will do their best to remove them. From what I've seen, revolvers that get sent back to S&W to get refinished come back almost better than new. I just can't wait to see mine! It's been close to 3 months now....

I support your decision to buy.

I have a round butt 10-8. Out of all the pistols I own, and for no good reason, it is probly the pistol I shoot the best. I just can't miss with it. So, if I stumbled on a square butt for $259 with goodies including a box of bullets, I'd have to go for it.

I've got about 6 Model 10s. But if I was near you and at that price, I'd have at least two more.

My very first S&W revolver was a 10-4 heavy barrel - a local police trade-in at a rural hardware store, of all things. Nearly unused. Cost $100. Go back and buy one of the others. They are easy to 'smith and get back to normal.
Sadly, I don't have it any more, nor a 2" stablemate I found and bought later.

You guys talked me into buying another S&W. Picked up one of these at my LGS a few days ago. 10-10 with holster, two speed loaders and leather G&G pouch for the two loaders. I picked the holster that says "Attica" stamped on the outside. These are NY Dept of Corrections turn ins that are out there on the market. My LGS guy is a S&W guy, so he removed the LE button on the outside, disassembled the gun and cleaned/oiled everything. He says my gun has been shot very little for what he sees. I worked all day on brass for loading and will be shooting in a couple of days. Very impressed with my new Model 10. I saw one of these for sale on gunamerica last night, so they are still out there for sale. Got home and see it was born in 1990. No lock, No MIM and out the door for under 300 bucks. Wow, You guys did good talking me into adding a 10-10 to the family, Thanks
