Default Do I need a Model 10?

I picked up a mechanically nice, but holster worn 4" model 15 that was a local LE agency trade in back home in Tampa a few years back. It is a -7 if I recall correctly. The firing pin is on the hammer and the hammer is not MIM. It has some Pachmyer grips I should replace because I'm not a fan but I figured it would be a good first centerfire revolver to teach my son fundamentals with. He won't be here until August, but you know the adage about poor planning...

Anyway, this week I received an e-mail from my local LEO supply house. They have LE trade-in 4" heavy barrel model 10s in "very good to excellent" condition with wood stocks, duty holster, speed loader pouch, speed loaders and a box of .38 special for $259. I sent the sales manager an e-mail and he said they have pinned barrels.

Soooooooooo. Do I need one? I've never warmed up to fixed sight revolvers, but I'm thinking for the price I might need a model 10 just because? I'm waffling over here, I need some help!

For the price, I would be all over one of these guns, provided they are mechanically sound.

Yes you need one. I also thought I should have adjustable sights on my revolvers, but I have a M-10 and a M-64 that with 158 Gr. SWC they shoot to point of aim and make me look like a good shot. At that price buy two take your choice sell the other.

Yea, I'm not even all that crazy about heavy barrel Model 10's but at that price, I'd grab one.

I will also say that yes you need one, especially at that price. The HB 4” K frames are sweet shooters, very easy to learn how to shoot a handgun with. The HB is very good at taming down the recoil.

Joe,
That is a fantastic price, pinned barreled guns are no more. Supply house might give you a better deal on 2 of them. Waffle no longer...

I'd say grab it before it's gone. Here is my 10-6 (on the right) with the
heavy barrel. Some call it a bull barrel. It worked alright for Jim Cirillo.
On the left is my 10-5 with 2" barrel. I believe S&W .38 Spls with the
fixed sights were sighted in with 158-gr. so that's what I use in mine, and
they shoot to point of aim.
The fixed sight K frames fit a little sloppy in holsters made for the
adjustable sight K frame. You might have to go holster shopping.

BUY! BUY! BUY! I love my M-10 heavy bbl. Also, have a M-13 same configuration. Both are great shooters.

I just checked my Algorithm of Gun Purchases, and that's a solid BUY. I have seven .38s, including a 15, but the 4" 10 is still my favorite to shoot.

Yes, buy one for yourself and one for your son if you can! The Model 10, especially with the heavy 4" barrel (IMO), is something everyone needs at least one copy of. They are like the crescent style wrench or the slip joint pliers that we all have in our tool boxes. They are not specialty tools but work pretty darn well for just about any job that might come up. And they are like an anvil, very difficult to damage or bugger up. Of course, I've seen guys who could damage an anvil with a rubber hammer! But with any kind of decent care, these revolvers will go anywhere and do just about anything. They are easy to carry and easy to shoot. There is a reason why this model sold well enough to have become the model that has sold the most revolvers of any model S&W ever made as far as I know. That's a great price and I doubt you will be disappointed if you get one. I've got a few Model 10's, so I've already got spares, but that's tempting to me! I'd give that for one without all the extra stuff they offer with the deal!

NO! Don't buy one. Buy two, one for you and one for your son. It's hard to come up with a better all around revolver than a heavy barrel Model 10. It will do pretty much everything you need a handgun to do. Maybe not everything you would want a handgun to do, but everything you need.

Just curious, did the seller mention blue or nickel finish? Either way, it's a good deal, if in the condition advertised.

Yes, go for it.

You’re not clear whether this is mail-order, but you mention “local”. If possible, go there soon so you can maybe select. You’d be amazed at the range of condition within a batch of the same guns from the same LE source. In your neck of the woods, I would check the nooks and crannies closely for corrosion. But that is a great price.

I would have got it right away. Probably would get 2. Do I need a model 10. NO. But at that price its better than money in the bank.
Holster $20, box of ammo $20, speed loader $10. Revolver $209.

Does that help?

In case you still need convincing, another emphatic YES from me. A great all-purpose gun, at a good price. Definitely get on down there and get your pick of the litter before word gets out. I’d also cast my vote for two. At some point your boy is going to want one of his own, and you won’t find them for that price then. Keep the best one tucked away and give it to him when the time comes. This is one case where I’d consider buying a gun a “good investment”. Good shootin’,
Doug

That's cheeper than I bought my whole setup from the NYPD equipment section back in 1986, and mine didn't have a pinned barrel. I did however get a spray can of mace. BUY, BUY, BUY.

I had the same opportunity some 6 years or so back when the Ohio Department of Corrections dumped a fat load of them on to our large local gun store. No idea how many more they had in the back but there were 8 in the case and I was able to handle all 8 and the one I selected ended up being a 10-10, made 1994, did not have the pinned barrel. Paid $250.

I handled each and chose the one that felt as if it had the best double action trigger feel and timing and lock-up, the finish was somewhere just better than atrocious. Some seriously misguided armorer or perhaps idiot property room lackey chiseled a 3-digit rack number on the bottom of the trigger guard with what looks like a rusty nail.

It's not easy for me to explain how much fun it is for me to own a revolver that works -SO- well, it this boringly accurate, looks so neglected and cost so little money. It's a total sweetheart.

Side story...
A buddy of mine also bought one right around the same time and we found out shortly later that his barrel had a bulge in it. This is always a possibility with a revolver, especially if you are picking from a big load of former issued guns. But my point is -- you could see it, feel it, and feel it especially when you cleaned the bore but on paper you simply couldn't tell, at least with jacketed and plated bullets. With lead maybe we would have?

His revolver... even with bulged barrel, STILL worth the $250+tax he spent on it. Mine is a prize to me and the exterior looks more like every previous custodian hated it.

I would love to have a Model 10 - as a shooter and a CC gun. Something I wouldn't be afraid to put some honest wear on. Fixed sights can be adjusted. I'll put tape on the sides of a front sight in order to move POI left-right.

My favorite Model 10 standard barrel got toasted in my house fire. One of the few guns to receive such a fate. So not only do YOU need one, I NEED ONE, TOO! How do I reach this guy?

Those police trade-ins can be bargains. Not many years ago, I picked this one up for a relative song - heavy pinned barrel and all. A few scratches here and there, as it had seen service, but a very effective revolver with a bit of history, as well.

You guys are brutal! I guess I need to buy one. I also dug my 15-7 out of the safe and yanked the horrible Uncle Mike's (thought they were Pachmyer) grips off and low and behold it's a round butt. I didn't realize I had a 4" round butt 15 so I guess a 4" square butt 10 to match wouldn't be so bad, eh?

ETA - I just called the dealer, I'm going to try to get up there after work tomorrow. You guys are terrible.

When I started coming around here I had, 5 S&W revolvers, close to 50 now.

I regret none of them, I am slowing down though. I just gritted my teeth and passed on a 3" N frame 624 44 special, because nobody here though tit was a much of a deal.

I would snap one of those up so fast it got windburn. I had the same gun but 357cal ( model 65) and it was a great shooter, and accurate. One that I should never have gotten rid of. For 259.00, I would use one as a paperweight.

For the record, a heavy barrel formerly issued Model 10 for $275 is definitely something that a gun guy NEEDS. Here are others that fall in the same area:

Hand Ejector 1905 anywhere from 1915 to WWII
Model 17, 6-inch barrel
Model 14, 6-inch barrel
Model 28, 4 or 6-inch barrel
Model 39-2
Model 915
Model 5906
Model 4506

Why? Simply put... Smith & Wesson made each of these models and each was such an irrational success in the sales market so S&W made tons and tons of them which all adds up to fantastic gun with much lower "collectibility" which means that their value as a shooter at a LOW price makes every one of them a no-brainer.

As they made soooo many, you can easily wait for exactly the combination of wear versus price that seems right to you.

You don't have to regret not buying one of these if you pass on a deal because you will come across three more the next time.

They made a zillion because they were all THAT good and folks kept buying them.

I thought it was the law that everyone was required to own a four-inch M10 or M64. No?

If you look up 38 special revolver in the dictionary, you will likely see a photo of the S&W Model 10. It is the Poster Boy for police service revolvers. No S&W collection is close to complete without 1 or 3!

For the record, I shouldn't really whine about needing a Model 10 - I do still have this one - a rare .357 Magnum Model 10:

You're getting a great deal! Please provide all of the contact information

I bought a police trade-in 10-6 with the police holster maybe approx 4 years ago for $350.00 and felt I got a good deal... until now

I really do not feel bad because it's in pretty good shape and out of all my handguns, I shoot the my model 10 the most accurately!

Congrats on this lead to a great deal and let us know what you end up with.

Everyone needs a Model 10. Everyone who is a lover of Smith revolvers at least. The Model 10 is the quintessential Smith medium frame revolver and was a mainstay in LEO use for many years. They are great guns, shoot a lot better than you might think and tend to have a DA trigger by which all others are judged.

Like one guy told me when I asked a similar question, "What does need have to do with it??". At that price I would be there waiting for them to open up the next day or be there before they closed that day. If you want it go get it.

Default Everybody ought to.....

Everybody ought to have a model 10. It's so basic that when you look up 'gun' in the dictionary there's a picture of one. I had one but had to say goodbye to it. I wish I had another one.

And for that price I'd smash the piggy bank and pick up loose coins.

Yup, I'll second what CajunBass and all the rest that say - BUY ONE OR TWO!

I was the same way for the longest time I never had a Model 10. Then within a two year period I ended up with 1 thin barrel, 2 heavy barrels & and a model 64 to boot. All police trade-ins. Love them, cause they are usually well broken in. Only the thin barrel which was department marked from Metro Police District of Columbia was stiff so it was probably "carried allot, shot a little".

I have to say, however, that I too like the looks and handling of the thin barrel models more.

One of the thick barrels has become the base for a 2 inch conversion project..........come to think of it, I need to check in with my gunsmith to see how that's going...............

So you guys talked me into driving out to the shop. When I arrived there were 3 left. One was a 10-4 but the finish was pretty bad - maybe 50% and the wood stocks were shot. There was one without a pinned barrel, in slightly better shape but with Pachmayer grips. Strike two. The third one came home. It's a 10-10 but it's in really nice shape. Some blueing loss at the muzzle and a little turn ring on the cylinder. It has a very nice double action trigger, ridiculous single action trigger and the wood stocks are in great shape. So, I'm a little disappointed it's not a pinned barrel model, but for the price and condition I can't really complain.
