Default Questions about my new (to me) M28-2

Bought this beautiful 6” to shoot as I’m absolutely loving my 4”. I believe the vintage to be 1968 (s/n S326403) - could someone confirm that approx date?

Also, it came with these stunning diamond target stocks. Without the box and without any numbers on the stocks, I’m not sure if these are at least “era correct” for the revolver? Just wondering, thanks in advance for your assistance!

Nice looking 28-2 and grips. S&W Standard Catalog says should be 1968 production.

That is a very nice example of a great shooting revolver. Congratulations.

As to specifics:
1. If 1968 is not correct, it is darn close. You are near the end of the S prefix numbers, so '68 is a safe bet. Only a letter can tell you for sure, since it could have shipped later.

2. The stocks are lovely, but I would tend to doubt they shipped on this gun for two reasons. At that time target stocks were not a standard item on the Highway Patrolman, although they could be ordered with them. Second, 1968 is a questionable year for the diamond, especially with the smaller "football" extractor relief. The diamond was phasing out in 1967, and if I recall correctly, by the late 1960s, the "football" was normally longer.

3. The trigger shoe is an aftermarket addition.

Incidentally, N frame target stocks were never numbered to the gun, so the absence here means nothing.

If I had to guess, I'd say the stocks and the trigger shoe were added at the same time by the then-current owner. It seems obvious that he was wanting to make his HP into mostly a target gun. If you letter this, you might be surprised to learn it shipped with target stocks, but I rather doubt it.

Final observation: The case colors on the hammer are striking! Overall, a very nice acquisition. Enjoy.

BTW - you might be interested to know that the retail price of that HP when it was first sold would have been $79.00. I know because I have the store receipt for the 6" HP my brother bought at that time.

Thank you very much JP@AK!!! I was hoping to get your input. Even if not original to the gun, I like to keep “era correct” stocks on my revolvers. So, since they’re at least very close, I’m happy with it.

As for that trigger shoe, it’s gone so I can admire those case colors.

I completely agree! Keep those stocks on it.

Good move on the shoe. The trigger is nice, but the hammer is stunning! A pic with the hammer cocked would be nice to see . . .

Stocks would be era correct. Whether it came with targets is hard to tell. My 28 no dash (1960) has target stocks on it that my Dad bought in the 60's. If I remember right, they are marked on the back, NT38. Your 28, is sure to impress you at the range! Bob
