A 629-1 followed me home last week. I believe it is dated around 1960 (s/n AFR7431) As you can see from the fit of the stocks they are not the originals…but what are they from? Could they be K frame cokes or could they be from a later model 629/29? No matter what the outcome, I bought it to shoot and I’m very pleased with the revolvers condition and it will be right at home with my 29-2 & 27-1. Thanks in advance for your help.

The 629-1 was made from 1982 to 1988.
The AFR serial number prefix dates to 1985.
The grips look about the size of K frame grips.

Well, they are too small for your N-Frame and no J-Frames have those type target grips, so they're K-Frame I think, but not cokes.

Your 629-1 came with N frame targets.

You can find the correct size - Ns - on the large auction site, but you don’t need to just jump on the first pair you see. They come up regularly so you have time to choose a set that matches both sides in color well, or has a grain pattern you like if those things mean anything to you.

Once you get them in, if you do not have a J or L-framed revolver, you can put those up for sale.

Also, if you are planning on using speedloaders, there is also a type where the left side stock panel will be “U” shaped at the top to allow more clearance for speedloaders to be used.

The ones you have are known as “football” stocks due to the shape at the top of the top left stock.

If you are not going to be using speedloaders, those types are perfectly fine; you can use speedloaders on football stocks as well, but the other type are a little easier to use with them.

Thanks for all your responses. Makes me wonder what happened to the original stocks and why would you put on stocks from a different framed model? Kind of had me scratching my head at the shop. I knew what I was getting into and very happy with the purchase. There was a very faint turn line on the cylinder, the lockup was perfect and all the gaps were right on. It was loaded with surface crud and it took acetone to get it off. It looked like surface rust (which gave me bargaining leverage), but my finger nail could scrape it off. What I could see of the internals – spotless, bore perfect. Couldn’t figure out where the surface gunk could have come from. It definitely hasn’t had many rounds through it and the price is allowing me to hook it up with correct stocks.
Would the correct target grips allow the use of speed loaders? I’d love to use this baby for Steel Challenge.

While I dont own a 629-1 it is the evolutionary equivalent to the 29-3 .

My early 1980's six inch 29-3 came with speed loader cut target stocks.

Probably someone had this gun and a K frame with Target stocks, and got the two sets confused. Since I only own one S & W this cannot happen to me. . Enjoy!
