Mod 29-2 w/New Grips
Got those ugly Hogue rubber grips off my 29-2 and just received a set of Rosewood Targets from Smith yesterday. I did find a small bit of rust on the sideplate under the Hogues. Also found some in the lock works when I detail stripped the revolver, as I do with all new to me used firearms. Those spots are all cleaned up now and treated with a rust prevention agent.
For those who complain about getting parts and etc. slow from Smith, I ordered these last Wednesday (06-13) got them yesterday (06-18). I know these are still not the "correct" grips for this model and date but they are nice.

Looks like you got a nice 29-2 there, OldChief. The new grips looks OK too, but if you can cough up the money later you might look at getting yourself a nice set of Culina Presentation stocks for that gun. The looks and the quality of the Culina stocks would better fit such a nice looking classic revolver.

Checked out Culina and learned they're just a few miles from me. They welcome locals but have to call in advance. I do believe I'll give them a call next week.

Jennifer Culina is very helpful. I just got a set of exhibition dark highly figured cocobolo K frame targets for my 17-3. They are stunning!! Good thing I do not live near them. I would have to add them to my checkbook

OldChief, I do like the looks of the wood grips on your 29-2, but these new S&W target grips from Altamont are more narrow than older S&W wood target grips and thus much less pleasant under recoil when shooting. I got a set of good looking Altamont target grips for my 625-9 in 45 Colt but went back to the ugly-as-sin Hogue grips that came originally with my 625-9.
S&W Model 625-9 in 45 Colt with Altamont Target Grips.
S&W Model 625-9 in 45 Colt with the original Hogue Grips.
Thanks for looking at the grips on my Mountain Gun.
God bless,
Birdgun

Those are altimont grips. Don't judge them till you shoot it. They are WAY too thin at the top and 3/4' too long on the bottom....Better wear a glove. My S&W 24 came with them. They had to go pronto.

I finally made it to John Culina's shop today. I received an education in different woods and etc. in a very short time. John really knows his business when it comes to producing grips. I saved a few dollars by purchasing a set of unfinished N grips. I've finished and re-finished many rifle stocks and usually get good results so now it will be a set of John's target grips for my model 29. I'm just not happy with the set I got from Smith, there's no body to them, they're just too thin. I'll hang on to them for trading material. John's grips have the feel to them that those from Smith used to have. Anyway, when I finish the project, I'll post some pictures. Yes, Culina grips are a bit costly but they're well worth it. If you really want to dress up your Smith revolvers with something that will last a lifetime, Culina is the way to go.

OldChief, I look forward to seeing the finish you put on those Culina grips. John and Jennifer and great people to deal with. I just wish I lived within driving range to make a visit to them and see their setup. And yes, the grips I've gotten from them feel just right in my hand too.
BTW, what wood are the stocks you bought from John?

The set of English Walnut grips I posted above were $185 off of their ebay account. John and Jennifer sell off eBay besides ordering from them direct. The first 2 sets I bought were through eBay and the last set I bought was directly from them. And I have another set on order right now, done in Olive wood.

When I was there, John had a set of Olive Wood grips on the finishing table. If they're yours, their beautiful. The Walnut grips would have cost me $170 if I had him finish them instead of doing them myself.

I've begun the finishing on my set of English Walnut Culina Grips. First photo, as I got them home. Second Photo, first coat of tung oil. I will do final finishing with Tru-Oil.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you want quality wood, the best craftsmanship and I feel the most for your buck - Culina Grips are the way to go.

Yes, they came out Ok but John does a much better job that I can. I'll probably go all the way the next time and purchase a finished set.
