Default Model 36 hammer??

Alright, I have a weird question here. I didn't notice this until recently. I have 2 Model 36's and I noticed the hammers are a little different. Every picture I Google or look up looks like my blued one. They are both a floating J from 1971-72 so I don't know why they are different. Maybe they found an old one that didn't get used. Here are some pictures of them. Any info provided would be appreciated. It's not really a big deal to me, they both are fine, but I was just curious as to possibly why they are different.

All my S&Ws, and every picture I can find the the Standard Catalog, have hammers like your blued 36. Did you buy the other one used? Could it be an aftermarket modification by someone who didn't like the sharp edges when he/she cocked the revolver? Otherwise, I got nothing.

Yes, I bought it used. I've never seen one like that. Maybe they bought and replaced a hammer. I just figured I'd throw that out there and see if anyone has encountered this before. Thanks for the info.

Looks like someone's attempt at lightening the hammer to me. Maybe trying to reduce it's mass so it would accelerate faster & reduce lock-time?

Could be. It looks so smooth and well done that it looks like it was made that way. There are no inconsistencies in it. I like how it looks, but just didn't know why once I started noticing all the other hammers.

Both hammers started life as the same standard hammer.

The nickel gun hammer has clearly had the edges polished, the sharp side edges of the knurling 'de-horned', and the rear corners of the spur rounded a bit to someone's liking. That's all it is and appears to have been done well with some skill.

Thanks for the info. It looks great, so we'll that that's why I thought it was made that way. It looks even everywhere. I thought at first it was just a different type of S&W hammer, but the more I looked, the less I found. I could tell the gun had been carried quite a bit when I got it so its definitely a good possibility that it's just been altered.
