So, I bought my first revolver...
EDIT: I just remembered this forum is for 1980's and newer, does this need to be moved to the forum for older revolvers?
As a follow up to the last thread I created, "Looking for my first revolver," I thought I'd share what I ultimately purchased. The first revolver I was going to purchase what a Model 19-5, but after some in the forum noticed that it looked like someone messed with the side plate and possibly reblued the cylinder and barrel I was a bit shy about the purchase. I still reached out to the guy, but he never responded... Missed a chance for a sale.
So I went looking on all the sites, until I found a Model 19-3 made in 1975 (according to the serial number) on gunbroker. The seller had an A+ rating with 3448 people leaving feedback. It's my first time using Gunbroker, so I am a bit nervous about it.
The final bid price was $656, but the seller charges $45 for shipping, plus a $30 FFL transfer, my final cost is looking to be $731.
I've included pics and the sellers description below. So... how'd I do?
Quote:
Seller's Description:
This is a very nice, lightly used 357 magnum revolver with a 4" barrel. Made b y Smith & Wesson when they still pinned barrels, it is a model 19-3. It is in very good condition showing only light finish wear. the action is very smooth, tight and in time. Bore and chambers are bright and clean. This is a gun you can do just about anything with, easy to carry, powerful enough to hunt, accurate enough to target shoot. The target grips are especially nice. there is an over travel stop installed. When you place a bid you agree to the terms. Please click on the Additional Terms of Sale tab and read before placing a bid or asking questions. If you do not agree to these terms please do not bid.

Looks like a very nice one. If a guy was to have just one revolver, a model 19 might just be the one to have. I think you did just fine.

Nice selection. Looks to be in nice shape. The grips on their own are worth 125+. They are classy. You may consider researching forcing cone issues with model 19's on this forum. If you shoot 357 mags in it, stay with standard 158gr loads. I personally would avoid the hot 357 ammo that is out there. From what I have read hot 125gr loads in 357 are what damage the forcing cone, and I do not think Smith replaces the bbl on these any more. I shoot mostly38. If you feel the need for more blast and recoil, try a model 29.
I think you have a nice gun to start out. Shoot it proudly. It is one of the best

I have one that might be a twin to yours except mine is a -4. I don't think I would take $731 for mine. The real nice ones just don't come this way often. I think you did just fine

You did just fine. You bought what you wanted and it's a nice looking revolver. It's hard to beat a model 19.

The 4" Combat Magnum is an iconic S&W firearm and like the Model 29 and 27 every true S&W fanatic should own at least one IMO
There is an expression with older collectible S&W firearms that you really dont pay too much but sometimes you pay it too soon,
With such pretty GA stocks but not having it in hand to examine I think you did just fine .
Trust me after owning and shooting that revolver you will want to get another one just like it, and a snub, and one or two in nickel, and a 6", and a SS Model 66 in each barrel length...
Then its like.... HEY I just found a 19 no dash with diamond target stocks...and a PRE 19.....and OMG a DASH 1 ..

Assuming it is as good as it looks, you did fine.
As others have said, if you're only going to have one, a 19 is a good choice.
The only thing that might be a tiny bit better IMO is a 66 - same gun in stainless, and it is only better because it is a more rust resistant material and easier to maintain finish.
You'll come to love that one for sure.

I've had good luck on GB...
But I always use the best sellers with a record of good sales. Everything sounds fine. That's one thing about online sales. Shipping and FFL transfers are part of the price. I bought a 686 for a fair price. Of course I had to add shipping and FFL. All I think about now is how I love my 686. You did just fine. It's often hard to find a specific gun and local dealers and pawn shops, might as well buy from a place you know has them.

Nice looking piece at a reasonable price in my opinion.
Aren't you glad that you missed the other one? This one comes with many fewer doubts and questions.

Yeah, I'm sure I'll be happier with this one. Thanks to all those who left advice on my other post!
Thank for the feedback on this one, all! I'll provide an update with pictures when I get it in.

The gun looks fine.If mechanically it is as sound as it looks,I'd say that even if you'd have paid $100 more that would be unimportant since the thing is a keeper and eventually will recoup the investment;it will only take a little longer.
Remember that when you pay a cheap price for something that doesn't last, you've paid too much for whatever it might be.But if you pay a little too much for something of good quality, you will have long forgotten the price you paid for it but long remember the good times you've had with it.

Around here they'd ask that for a good shooter grade. You done good! My problem was, yeah a six inch, and a nickel plate and a .41 mag! Gotta have that! And mod 29's. Some 29's. What about a mod 24 and stainless. Lots of stainless!

I'd say you did well. I would expect a gun like that to be tagged about $750 at my local shop. It would probably sell quickly, so there wouldn't be much chance to see what they'd take if it sat around for a bit. As my buddy who works there tells me, "If you don't want it, the guy behind you does."
And he's right. You better not go to the men's room without putting a "hold" on something you think you might want in that place. Every Smith & Wesson geek in the area hangs around there.

Consider yourself lucky you saw it on Gunbroker before I did. The only thing better is if it came in the original box with the cleaning kit and all the paperwork. You did just fine.

Depending on your area you came away with a great price. I was walking out of my gunsmith’s the other day after having the rear sight blade replaced on my 19-2 with the 3 t’s and one of the other regulars there offered me 900 on the spot. I told him to go grab his brinks truck because it’d take a better offer than that. Great looking piece! Enjoy shooting it and enjoy the upcoming hunt you will be on for a K22 or a 66 or a 36 snubby or, or a... time to check the prices on my watch list.

Funny story. It took me forever to find a model 19 this past week. Now it's like there are a hundred on gun broker. Quite a few are from PA, including the one I bought, that's weird. Anyway, there were several 19-3's in the original box and in near perfect condition. I'm watching half a dozen of them. Figured at least I'll have a good idea of the going rate now.

You did excellent , here's my take if you want the gun and have the money the price really doesn't matter.
Now that is if you're not taking food off the table or shorting other commitments .
And that is a good price actually .

Great looking gun and those targets are especially good looking ,the price is reasonable but two things I have learned since being on this forum both from a very highly regarded and very knowledgable collector. 1st rule don't sweat the money too much because they make money every day S&W isn't making guns like this anymore and likely never will ,with care it will go up in value ( you never pay too much you only buy too early as they say) 2nd rule and he just taught me this ,and I quote " only buy something you would be proud to own " Don't thank me thank Mr Ralph Tremain for the wisdom .You can be very proud of that revolver .congratulations

I just wanted to give an update. It took awhile, but I finally got to pick up my model 19 from the FFL today. Thought I'd share some pictures. I dont know if it comes through in the pictures, but it looks like there is a little holster wear on the side.

Nice P&R M19. $731 is on the high end IMO, but not unreasonably high.
In a year or two that price will probably look like a deal, and you'll have got a couple of years fun out of it already.
So IMO, you did OK.

I guess the $400 I spent on a nickel 4" M19-4 wasn't that bad a price after all. Of course, that was a few years ago.

I'd have said about $100 too much, but what do I know, I'm from PA and they are all over here....
Good job!

Looking at the pictures you posted when it arrived, I'd say you did alright. You didn't steal it, but you didn't get robbed either. As others have said, if you only have one revolver, that's a very good one to have. You will be able to shoot it it with 38 wadcutters just about forever without wearing it out, yet if you want to "get serious" it will handle 357 Mag ammo well too. I'm sure you have been made aware of the dangers of using light weight bullets at high velocities... I prefer to stick with 158 gr SWCs at moderate 357 Mag velocities.
Congratulations on your purchase and I hope you will enjoy it.

Sittinduck21, I don't think you could have bought a better revolver at any price. That is one very good looking handgun you have there. In my opinion, the Model 19 "Combat Magnum" is the very pinnacle of all S&W revolvers...whether S&W or any other brand...the very best!
Here's mine. I shoot it better than any handgun I've ever shot.
S&W Model 19-3 "Combat Magnum" in 357 Magnum
God bless,
Birdgun
