Default Model 66 choices

I am working a trade, my CZ75B SAO & a brand new Kadet 2 kit for a model 66. The guy has given me the option of either a 4" 66 no dash or a 2.5" 66-1, both with box & paperwork. I'm leaning toward the 2.5". Which would you pick?

Depends a lot on 2 things. 1st what will you use it for, carry or range work. Carry, the 2.5" and everyday shooting, the 4'. If you are just going to sell, then the 2.5" will sell quicker and for more money at least in these parts. Either one would be a good trade in my opinion

Can’t tell really well, but it looks like the no dash has a SS rear sight.

I’d go for the snubbie but I’m biased, I have a pair that are awesome shooters!

I have a 66 2 1/2", so I would say the snubbie. Heck I'm ok with mine out to 15-20 yards at the range. Also as stated easier to sell if you are so inclined. If you can some how swing both, well that would simplify things. T

The stainless rear sight is cool, but I go for the -1 snubbie.

Well, I am the odd-ball here. I would like to collect the variations of the 66 and getting the 66-0 with both the stainless and blue sights would be a good start. But then I am not a big snubbie fan so there is that.

That's pretty much my thoughts. I'm not a big fan of snubbies, but I am a fan of 4" barrels. The SS sights are a bonus.

My preference is also for the snubby....

Fun to shoot at the range and reasonable size/weight for EDC.

If the 4" has the stainless rear sight it should have a greater collectors value, to some degree. But, the 2 1/2" round butt model 19/66's are small enough to carry yet feel like a real gun in your hand. If were my decision, I'd go with the 2 1/2" version.

Let us know what you decide.

Hey CB, the guy is in Blacksburg, wanna ride out with me next week? You can get the 4" and I'll get the snubby.

If I did not already have one, I would go for the snub. Great multi purpose wheel gun.
I have a snub -1 and it shoots very well even with the short barrel. Plus they seem to be in much higher demand than the longer barreled versions.

As previously mentioned, depends on what your shooting habits are. Most of my shooting is at the range out to 25 yds. so I would select the 4". If you shoot at closer distances, either one would do. If you intend to pack all the time, then the 2" conceals better. Regardless, you can't go wrong having a 66.

I´ll go for the 2.5". Those snubbies are awesome shooters.

I have both a 4 in and 2 1/2 in Model. I can’t tell any difference between them shooting plates at 10 yards. The 2 1/2 might be better for resale.

Better for resale might be a understatment. I think on average the difference being somewhere in the $200-250 range when comparing the 2.5" to the 4". Availability also a big factor, most folks are reluctant to let go of the 2.5", probably in fear of not being able to find/afford another. My vote is 2.5" all day long or better a must have in both barrels if you can swing it.

The all stainless 4 inch for collecting....... the -1 for concealed carry.

Big question you didn't answer is; what 66s do you already have or is this your first?

If it’s possible financially to do both, since you are making a trade equivalent to the cost of one, see what cash you’ll need to do a one for two swap. If the guy needs a little cash and you have the ability to scrape up some cash, go for it. That’s how I got a bunch of guns. The pain short term is overcome by the gain long term. If not, I prefer the 2.5 inch. Just personal preference.

I'd normally select the four-inch as an all-round gun, and with proper stocks, it conceals about as well as the snub, and it is easier to shoot well, has a full length extractor rod, and higher velocity.

BUT...the no dash sometimes heated up and was sluggish in operation. S&W relocated the gas ring to cure the problem, thus, 66-1.

For operational integrity, I'd choose the snub, in this case. But a collector may prefer the early stainless.

My own is a four-inch M-66-3. But you don't have that option in this particular deal.

I had a M-19 snub. It was hard to shoot well with full loads and I wasn't confident beyond 25 yards. But it has the power to kill an alligator at close range. You just need to know the vital scale and hit it. At very close range, it'd kill bear or cougar, but the snub is
markedly more difficult to shoot well.

Snub is probably better everyday trading stock. Value in a room of serious collectors no idea. As a user for me the 4 inch as I want a full length ejector rod on anything I carry. Yes i do carry a J snub but that is because a J w a 3 inch barrel wont fit in my pants pocket. I dont carry it if i can comfortly wear a covering garment. Then i go to a larger handgun. If everyone open carried, my choice would be a 4 inch M28 or a 625 Mountain Gun or a 1911. That's me though. Can't say what is best for you.

The SS sights version is definitely for the collector. I was the 2nd owner of a 66 no dash in about 1975 that came from the factory with them. They were absolutely miserable to try to shoot well with in bright sunlight. After S&W went to blackened SS for the rear and put a red ramp front on they were much better.

As was stated I own both 66s in 4" One with blued sights, one with stainless. The stainless sights are horrible in full sun as well as at an indoor range, the blued are much better. That being said I've been on the hunt for a snubby 66 for years.

I have both. The 66 no-dash with as rear sight will eventually be a collector’s choice however today the 2 1/2 barrel is the choice for those interested in carry, therefore, today you often see them priced a little higher than the 4”. It’s great to have choices, especially when both are great choices.

Well, I have a 66-1 2 1/2" in the original box, and three 66 no-dash 4-inchers (two with the stainless rear sight - one of which is in the original box) and love them.

But, don't sell your CZ75B SAO & new Kadet 2 kit short. That SAO CZ75B is very desirable. I wish I had one.
