New to me 28-2 Highway Patrolman
Just back from my LGS, They had this on their website for $649.00. I walked out with it at 600.00. It is a pinned and recessed 28-2 Highway Patrolman. It appears only slightly used with just a tad of bluing loss at the barrel end. At first I thought it may have been refinished as it was a little glossier than some previous 28's I have seen but the stampings are all crisp and the top strap etc. are all matted as they should be. Also has zero flame cutting on the interior of the top strap. SR #N1045xx. I found the 'Ultimate M-28 thread' on here and it looks like it left the mothership in 1973. How did I do?

You did very well. Some were glossier than others. Remember they weren't building collectibles they were building affordable guns. Shoot it and enjoy it. It is one fine firearm.

S&W makes prettier guns but they don't make any that's better than a Model 28.
You done good.

The gloss could be from oil put on it or silicone. Give it a good cleaning.
Coming from a colt Python and ruger guy(me) these are fine 357 magnums. I have a few growing roots in the safe.

It's getting tougher to find them in that condition, price,, who cares, it's a great revolver.

Differences in Bluing- same gun
That's a nice Model 28-2, and a good price. I recently picked up a 28-2 for $485, but it came with a set of not-so-nice custom target stocks. I replaced those with a set of Magna stocks that I had in my parts box. Funny about the bluing on HPs...I have several Model 28-2s, and the bluing seems to differ on different parts of the same gun. The barrels and cylinders on all of mine are slightly shinier than the bluing on the frames. I assume that S&W must have blued (and/or polished) the parts separately in batches.

you did good! I found this first year 6in barrel in a pawn shop for 600.00 with those obnoxious rubber grips and was happy! I also have another first year 4in I think I paid 500.00 for a few years ago, but the prices are not dropping! this one has shinner bluing than the 4in and neither has been refinished,,,,,,,,,,,

You did just fine. Of all my Smiths (and I own more than a few), the 4" HP is still my favorite shooter. With my adult kids getting their picks, I'm down to only one at the moment, but one of these days I'll add another.
I miss the days when one could buy an excellent example for less than $300 though. My first one was purchased new for <$140, shortly after I returned to the World from SE Asia. It is still in the family, along with the box and tools!
Here's one of them at the range a couple years back:

Given the condition of that Model 28-2, I think you did good!
