New Car Gun Doubles As A Club
Decided to get that nice 1949 pre M10 out of my truck. Been there about 2 years and deserves better. Never been a fan of post-war N frames. . .way too overdone, as in 3 pounds to shoot a 357. I got out this one I picked up around a month ago for cheap. Nowhere near nice enough to be collectable. Plus, I've been know to flip (sell or trade) anything I happen to have in my truck for a nice profit. I may not even load this thing. Figure I can beat about anything that lives around here to death with it in short order. Just kidding. I am going to load it. Put the old cylinder and Pachs back on it, so I know exactly what I have in it. Going to a birthday party tomorrow. It probably won't last the evening.

Absolutely, yes! Keep guns where you are apt to need them the most even when you are not even thinking about needing to carry a gun. I live in Georgia where your car is an extension of your house in all legal regards. Worried about theft? You can steal a gun from a person's house just as easy as from his car or truck. Maybe easier. I can kick my way through most walls of most houses built these days. A double-wide is not even an obstacle. Most safes and lock boxes don't deter a thief hardly at all. Around here they steal the whole safe and open it later. People worry too much about theft. Worry more about needing a gun and not having one within reach.

Here in Massachusetts it's a felony to THINK about a gun without a lock on it! I wonder what it's like to live in a free country?

In a free country we keep loaded guns concealed in our motor vehicles with no permit or license required. A nice, relatively new law our legislature decided we should have. Your vehicle is an extension of your residence. A free country concept if you ask me!!

Feels pretty good for the most part. Our state legislature voted constitutional carry in but our illustrious governor (lame duck) vetoed it. We already have permitted open/concealed carry but not requiring a permit is a step closer to true liberty IMO. Hopefully the new governor in Nov. will get on board.

Seems to me the best place to carry/secure a loaded gun is on your person.
By storing a loaded firearm in your car or truck you create a couple of potential problems......one (or more) for you and one (or more) for law enforcement.
The problem for you is that the gun in your truck may be used against you and your loved ones when it is taken from the vehicle. There are also some civil liability issues concerning improperly stored/secured firearms in your car or in your home.
The problems for law enforcement include having the firearm used against them when they respond to a crime in progress run, or if the stolen gun is used in the commission of a crime later. (I have personally seen this happen many times)
Many people argue that they are not responsible for the potential events that happen as a result of someone taking their firearm that happens to be secured in their vehicle. Small consolation when one of your family members or a police officer has been injured or killed, and the injury or death could have been prevented by the proper storage of the gun in the first place.
Just because you are free to "legally" do something, doesn't mean it's a good practice.

You’re only two states away. Maine is still governed by the Constitution. We have Constitutional and permitted carry.
Come on up and taste freedom.

There's a slim chance I may need a gun SOMEDAY. If that day ever comes, it had better be on my person cuz I doubt I'll have time to go fetch it. So far my house or vehicle has never needed a gun & wouldn't be able to use it anyway. A car (especially an unlocked one) harder to break into than a house, please.

Interesting. Rural Iowa would be like living on he moon for some of you folks. I leave my truck unlocked with the keys in it out by the garage. I don't often leave a gun in the truck over night but if I did both the truck and the gun is going to be there in the morning. There are always loaded guns in several places in the house. Guns aren't much good if they're unloaded.
I find it easier if I'm going to the PO to just shove the gun under the seat when I leave home as it's a federal offence to carry in the PO. When I'm driving the pistol/revolver is usually in a holster on the seat beside me. If the coppers pull you over just leave your hands on the wheel and tell him you have a gun on the seat, he'll tell you how to proceed from there. Country cops don't go all freaky deaky over guns as long as you have a permit to carry.
There are many times when I travel any distance there's a loaded ar15 behind the seat with several loaded mags as well as a hand gun somewhere on my person.

I keep at least one loaded gun in the truck at all times - in a lock box and securely fastened inside the center armrest console (as in you just about have to take a seat out to remove it). I'm not saying it can't be stolen, but I've done my part to make sure it isn't done easily. If I'm in the truck, then there at least 2 loaded guns in the truck. And depending on who I'm with there will be several loaded guns in the truck. In Texas I think law enforcement pretty much expects it. Hand them the carry license along with the drivers when they approach. That and not behaving like an idiot should keep hassles with a LEO over a gun to a minimum. And if one does want to hassle you, comply and sue the department later if they were in the wrong.

It's your weapon and your truck and I think you should keep whatever in wherever as you sweet please.
As for using your weapon as a club, I recall the instructor at a rifle course I attended shouting, "SHOOT your opponent! Don't try to club him to death. If you want to club him, get a Louisville slugger. It's cheaper than your rifle and makes a better club."

The gun in the photo is the replacement for the K-frame he mentioned.

Yeah. . .the photo is one of the M28 (1973) that I put in the truck today to replace the 1949 gun that has finally come into the house. After nearly 2 years in the truck, it still looks as good as the day I put it there. Use the Ren Wax and wax those guns good.

I've told this before, but it bears repeating.
A few years ago at work I got to talking to a couple of local LEOs and the subject came around to guns. They both said that the vast majority of stolen gun reports they do are for weapons stolen out of vehicles. Just something to think about.
Last January I was at a gun show and someone broke into my truck. Obviously looking to score guns because they didn't take anything else. They totally ignored my tools and other expensive things they could have stolen. Good thing is that they struck out. No guns in my truck. I later learned that several vehicles were hit that day and the thieves did find some guns.
If there's a gun in my vehicle its because its strapped to me.

Still looks to nice for a truck gun to me. My truck guns lean towards beaters in stainless or plastic.

Of course there are many, many people here in the Peoples Republic who have loaded guns in their vehicle. Most of them are either out on bail awaiting trial or are on probation for some violent felony.

I no longer drive due to old age and physical problems. But having had my car broken into three times, the only time I would leave a gun in one would be for a short run into a post office or government building. I've only had my home burglarized once.

I keep a snubby 38SPC in my console. If I need it it will be there. If it is stolen a replacement cost is a small price to pay to have one available if you do need it.

I don’t. I carry mine (minimum 2). The vehicle is for spare ammo that I can’t carry.

Georgia is a great state and the people there have always made me feel welcome. I don't think I would have any problem living there. Unfortunately, roots grow deep and it isn't always about me.
And to DocB, that's an honest model 28 and I bet it shoots great. I have an old 6" that I shoot often. It is a very accurate gun and easy to shoot. I use a lot of 158 grain, lead 38's for plinking and my favorite 357 load is a 158 grain JSP and 296. Sorry for the thread hi jack but I've been feeling a little oppressed after weeks of "red flag" debate here in the Socialist Republic of Massachusetts.

DocB: I'd keep that gun. Much too nice to leave in a truck or sell.
For those who leave guns in vehicles, how would you feel if your gun was stolen and then used to kill someone?

I carry a handgun. In my locked truck box I keep an old mossy 500 loaded with self defense rounds. I have a keyless entry and have access in seconds. Seconds are too long in a fight, but it’s a solid back up.
I hope anyone who keeps an unsecured gun in a vehicle - door looks don’t count, do not have gun related bumper stickers.
To the OP mentioning my feelings if someone takes my gun and kills someone? I wager a person who would do such a thing should already be in prison. Don’t blame the gun, blame the vermin who uses it in a crime.

A few years ago I was pulled over. When the officer came to my window I informed him that I had a loaded Glock next to me.
“I don’t care about your Glock, why are your tags expired?”
I received a warning. Gotta love Georgia. If I were still living in NJ I would just be getting out of prison.

If my car was broken into and my gun was stolen, I would feel like a VICTIM! If my gun is used to kill someone, the ONLY person responsible would be the one who pulled the trigger. If my car was stolen and used to run over someone or my base ball bat was stolen and used to beat someone to death it would be no different. I would still be victim. Don't blame the victim for the crime! It makes you sound like you are from Massachusetts!

I've never understood the logic used to blame someone for not foreseeing the actions of another. "feelings"... useless.

Despite recent setbacks, Vermont still allows pistols in cars with no qualifications. No loaded rifles though. Old anti Poaching rules.

Regarding "feelings" I would feel no differently than if I sold an upstanding man a gun and he used it incorrectly. The fact that I owned a certain gun at some time in my life has no bearing upon where it is now and/or what it is being used for. Regarding where I live, "they" all have guns. We have shootings almost every day in Macon. It never stops. When you bring in Milledgeville and Warner Robins, the weekly shootings double or triple. Our population here has been downgraded so much over the past 30 years, the degradation is not even measurable. We did it to ourselves. Feel bad about that!

I witnessed someone trying to access my work truck once. I was hanging wallpaper in a nursing home and happened to look out the window and saw a resident attempting to open my driver side door. It was locked and boy was I glad because I had my loaded SIG 239 under the seat. I was young then and since that time, I always make sure all my vehicle doors are locked! Also, I never leave a gun in my truck overnight.
For the last 12 years, I not only lock my truck and car, I also lock the gun with a Master Lock trigger lock. So if I need to walk into a post office or wherever I cannot carry my gun, my vehicle and my gun are both locked. I just makes sense to me to do that. The trigger lock could ultimately be defeated, but it would certainly prevent my firearm from being used by a criminal to harm others.

I'd feel bad about the theft. As for the killing, that would depend upon who was killed, and whether the killer shot the decedent or used the gun as a club.

I think, in 2018, we're finally to the point where nearly all P&R N frames are too nice/valuable to be "truck guns."
I wrote an article a ways back about the subject. The Survival Trunk Gun by J.S. - SurvivalBlog.com
A newer article that pretty much supports my analysis: http://blog.cheaperthandirt.com/aint...op-10-choices/

Where I live there are lots of guns and keys in cars. I see rifles in racks of trucks with the windows down.Might not be a good idea in some of Montana's bigger towns though. The sheriff and county attorney might not be please that you shot someone breaking into your truck, but, charge you? I doubt it. He had better have sung in the church choir every Sunday, before somebody around here wouldn't think that's whats happens when you steal stuff and call for blood. If I gave sold or loaned someone a gun and they killed somebody, the only way I would be in trouble is if they could prove I knew they intended to do that. If I left a loaded gun propped up on my porch and the sheriff happened to stop by for any reason he would be smart enough to keep his hand off it. Ain't his, and it ain't his business unless he is coming with a warrant. I am positive the sheriff has seen everything from a rusty 22 to a 300Wm setting just inside the door of most any place he has visited and knows lots of the vehicles around here have guns in them. So does everyone else. Occasionally some idiot usually a newbie kid from out of town steals one. He best keep it out of sight. Sooner or later people figure out who a thief is and then they are not welcome anywhere. Being a know thief around here would mean it would be a bad idea just to go on someones place.
Just when is it my fault, when I leave it on the seat? under the seat? in the glove compartment? Car locked, car unlocked, broken out of a lock box in car? from my house door unlocked? door locked? cheap safe broken into? price point on safe required it isn't my responsibility? From a steel reinforced concrete vault with a heavy steel door? Just when is it my fault and not the *** thief.
Who gets to draw the line, a gun hating flaming liberal or some good ole boy on a raach in the middle of no where?

So you are suggesting that the forum members that do store/carry a loaded gun in their vehicle are Felons, on bail, probation or only the ones that live in mass????? Since your statement suggests that ONLY the above listed group would have a firearm in their vehicle!! Or are you suggesting that someone who does keep a firearm in a vehicle should be arrested/charged???? I do not keep a firearm stored in my vehicle, except, if I need to go into PO or courthouse, and then it would be concealed in a locked container. If this is your belief, maybe you have been drinking the kool-aide?? Be Safe

I think he was referring to his area. In a place with oppressive gun laws, law abiding citizens fear procecution, jail, fines etc. The criminals just look at gun laws as something else on their laundry list of reasons they are out on bail, probation, or going to prison for. To. Them it just another "thing". No big deal to them.

I didn't steal it and I didn't use it to illegally kill someone. I'd sleep just fine . . .

Yeah, everybody does, don't you?????
As a retired LEO, surely you know how hard it is to get to your weapon when you are strapped in behind the shoulder belt and the steering wheel, right!

Oh by the way, the Bodyguard .380, Kel-Tec P3AT and Ruger LCP .380 renditions are designed to be visor guns. They tuck away behind a pull down sun visor so conveniently! Don't let anybody fool you, .380 will kill just as quick as the flying ash tray useless .45 caliber round.
Did you know it is a 9 mm round 9x17. The shoot a bullet only 100 per second slower that the 9x19 luger round and at 100 grains which is only 15 grains lighter than the 9x19 Luger!
I really like the S&W Bodyguard .380. S&W got it right, they used a steel frame, not aluminum and steel steel roll pins, not plastic pegs to hold it together and that double strike capability is a REAL LIFE SAVER!

No. That's not what I am suggesting at all. My point is that most of the people carrying guns around in cars in Mass are felons. Which is different from suggesting that you are a felon because you carry a gun in your car. It is a back handed way of saying that the strict gun laws here are a complete failure and don't stop anyone from illegally carrying a gun. In this back asswards state, someone can break into my locked, secured, home and steal a gun and I could still be charged with having an unsecured firearm if the gun was not locked in a container, in the case of an "assault weapon" or had a gun lock on it in the case of any other gun. The gun unattended in a car is a non starter here because it is illegal to do under any circumstances. It's a joke! But watch out. With the new composition of the Supreme Court the next big decision affirming your 2nd rights is likely to come from here.

Not that a 380 can't be very lethal (hey James Bond used one), but to equate a 100gr bullet at an optimistic 1000fps with a "useless" 200 gr 45 caliber one going 850fps is quite a leap of faith. I wonder why all the police departments, FBI, and other alphabet soup don't go to the 380/ They have pretty well left the 45 acp, true, but not because of its killing power. It lost favor because recoil management by most people and round count is the big reason.
You like your 380. fine. I am happy for you. I could care less if you want to pack it or even a 22lr. Hey, the 22 has killed and will kill lots of people. It is my choice to pack a 45 acp and if I have to defend myself or mine I guess I will just hope the assailants I shoot with its "useless" bullets get real annoyed and decide to just go away.
Useless, useless, jeez O Pete. Lot of ground being occupied by corpses from a 45.
Rant complete. Have a nice day.
