Default Collecting Themes

I have a master plan for rebuilding my collection. I want a representative assortment of Smith models, types and barrel lengths, but I have to stay within a budget. So I have decided to stay with .38 special and .357 magnum calibers (that way I'll only have to keep one box of ammo around the house :-).

So I want blue, nickel and stainless guns; N, K and J frames; 6", 5", 4", 3", 2" barrels; target and magna stocks; diamond and modern stocks; round and square butt; pinned, pinned & recessed and non-pinned; 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's.

Finally, because I am a Smith nut (and I don't believe in an overly foolish consistency), I will also find another Model 25-5 blue 6" (my favorite to shoot, and because it says Colt on the barrel) and I've already found a like new Model 59 9mm (because it was one of Smith's true innovations).

That's my collecting manifesto, for now at least. Discounting the last two, I can pull it off with just five or six guns. For the 3" I'm hoping to find a Model 13 round butt "FBI" gun, but a Model 65 3" round butt or a Model 36 3" square butt would work. I already have a Model 640-1 from 1996 (I wanted a 1990's gun).

Does anyone else have a collecting "theme" or strategy that they're working on?

I have all the concentration of a goldfish and the contents of my "collection" reflect that. Mostly I go with what I want to shoot next.

Mr Wells said he was on a budget? I see sack lunches in his future. The bug is upon him. I wish him well.

My theme is if I see it and I want it do I have money in my jeans pocket? I'm firmly in the jaws of the bug. The only thing that saves me from utter ruin is that I'm a shooter accumulater and rarity, perfect condition, original grips and boxes mean little to me.

Yeah, but why would you want to?

My first Smith revolver was a 66-2 4 inch 357 mag and I told myself I wanted my "theme" to be 38 special and 357 mag revolvers. My second revolver was a 57-1 41 mag. So then I changed my "theme" to 38 special, 357 mag, and 41 mag. Fast forward a little bit and my current accumulation of Smith revolvers consists of a couple 22lrs, a 38 special, five 357 mags, a 9mm, two 41 mags, two 44 mags, and two 500 mags. So I guess my current "theme" is small revolvers, medium revolvers, and big revolvers.

Do you mean a .35 Auto? Not too many variants of that one. I guess you really did have to branch out.

Are you really going to make me whine about my dwindling finances and look pathetic in front of everyone?

You're right, though, you can never have too many. That's why I already have a 59, even though it's not a revolver. I wanted another one. I also secretly want to get another 1911 A1, but don't tell anyone they might kick me off the forum.

Base on the above..... one of each.....you will need 5,400 guns .......

I collect/ accumulate what I like. The themes just seem to fall in place.

Good luck,,, my late wife and I collected Highway Patrolman revolvers. When she passed away, we had 14, all different in some way. We lacked 4 ( IIRC) of having a complete set. That was of just 1 model with variations of a relatively short run. When my collecting partner passed away, I sold off or gave away the collection piece by piece.

I'm so sorry you lost your dear partner. My emotion was just was self-pity when I gave mine away. Guns are things. Friendship, fellowship, companionship, love are what really matter in my humble opinion.

I collect them in kind of a weird way. I love the model 19's with 2.5 inch barrels so I have a 19-2, 19-3, 19-4, 19-5, 19-7, and a 19-8. I still need to find a 19-6 here in CA. I also have model 57's in a 57 no dash, 57-1, 57-2, 57-3, 57-5, 57-6, Still need to find a 57-4.

IMHO, interests or "collecting themes" rarely last. This has been the case with me...and especially so, when it comes to tastes in firearms. What appeals to me today, might not do so in a few years time. For several years I have had a DA revolver and lever gun obsession...to the exclusion of everything else. I pretty much sold off anything that didn't fit into those categories. Lately I have found my eyes wandering towards other, more modern firearms.

To quote Master Yoda: "Always in motion is the future."

I decided to collect "best of breed" guns, not necessarily the most rare, but some of the most desirable.

Also, if a really good deal lands in my lap, I try to make it happen.

Barring a winning lottery ticket, I'm not going to be able to play with the guys on here with 10 Registered Magnums or a pile of S&W one-offs and salesman's samples.

I wanted a .41 Magnum again last summer, my original one was stolen in 1984. Turns out it was a P&R model. It has been so long since I was into them I had no idea there were non-P&R models.

Luckily the one I got last summer was a 1978 no-dash 8 3/8” 57. Now I have four .44 Magnums to boot, all square butt 29s and 629s.

So I guess my theme is square-butt N frames, in both nickle and stainless finishes, in 6, 6.5 and 8 3/8” lengths.

Only bad thing is now I gotta work up 10 good loads, a reduced-load accurate plinker and a full-power accurate JHP for each one.

It was easier when I just had one revolver, but hey, I got that kind of time!

Now that's a couple of great collecting themes. As much as owning, it's the "hunt." And of course, it doesn't exclude owning others that are interesting.

My collection has been mostly focused on K frame .38 Specials. Why? The K frames in .38 Special are less money than the K frames in .357...and a whole lot less money than K frames in .32 H&R...and a whole WHOLE lot less money than K frames in .32 S&W Long. So initial outlay of cash is a big consideration, not just because of limited resources available, but because nothing is easier to sell (if I need to) than, say, an 80% model 10 for $350 to $380.

I have sub collections within my collection - model 10's in every barrel length from 2" to 5", for example. I also have several K-38's, Combat and otherwise. Beyond that, there isn't really a rhyme or reason for the old Smith revolvers. I should say, however, I've mostly stayed away from pre-war guns...though I really don't know why. I'm mostly thrilled by revolvers from the years 1946 to 1986, so I guess that could be called another "theme." I have a few later than that, though.

I’m with Green Frog on this one. My theme seems to be what I like today. Recently that seems to have been a lot of 22’s. Though I did recently major splurge on a .32 also.Collecting Themes

My original thoughts years ago was to obtain every gun listed in the 1941 S&W catalog, (birth year). After I obtained a copy of the 41 catalog and looked up sll the items listed I came to the realization that there are too many really expensive guns in that category and many so rare I would never find them. I then decided to obtain one example of every decade S&W had been in business. Last fall when I found a #1, 1st Issue, 3rd type from 1858 I reached that goal. Now it's just whatever becomes available that I like.

In my original post I forgot to list an L frame. I know that newer models are outside the year range of our forum group, but I want my theme to be as complete as possible. It will now take me six guns to pull off my master plan. Note that they will all be .38 special or .357 magnum:

Model 14-1, K, 6", 1961, 6", Blue, Diamond Targets, Done
Model 10-5, K, 4", 1968, Blue, Magna PC Stocks, Done
Model 27-2, N, 5", 1977, Nickel, Football Targets, Done
Model 10 K or 36 J, 3", 1980s, Blue, Round Butt, TBD
Model 686, L, 4" or 6", 1980s, Stainless, Cut Out Targets, TBD
Model 640-1, Magnum J, 2", 1996, Stainless, Round Butt, Done

These models and years have other varieties of features such as pinned, pinned and recessed, not pinned, full under lug, shape of cylinder release. If I find the right Model 10 or 36 then there will be a 3" bull barrel.

I have a Model 10-8 (bull barrel 1984) and a Model 59 Automatic (with box, 1977), but they will have to be traded or sold to finance the acquisition of the 686 and 10 or 36. I have a left over 1947 M&P 5" that I've promised to a friend, and a Model 19-2 4" (1964) that could be swapped into the mix in place of the Model 10-5 (they are both keepers).

I know it seems silly for me to be carrying on about this, but my gun show days are about done (legs and back don't work well any more) and I think sites like Gun Trader are an insult. This set of revolvers will be a nice way to memorialize my active decades of collecting and shooting.

I tried having a theme.......
But now it seems that if it's a Smith & Wesson it fits the "theme".
Now, where will I put that new safe? I'll determine the theme later.

I’ve gone thru phases over the years myself...1903 Springfield’s, Valmets, Belgian FALs, German Weatherbys, S&Ws...I’ve resigned myself to pretty much anything I like at moment so I can’t really say I “collect anything” but guns in general anymore and I just accumulate.

For me it's all about S&W K frame's with non-adjustable sights & square butt frames, in 3-4" barrels, I just shoot them well. I need a model 65 3" barrel, round butt cuz I love the look of it. I also found a 681 4" that I want so bad but it's at a pawn shop and the man is so insulting/unreasonable to deal with that I would never give him my money, but I want it bad.

Here is my theme, strictly enforced:

-pre-lock
-not stainless
-unfired or close to it
-at least one of each in each barrel length

Default Themes are fleeting, Grasshopper!

Ahhh- gun collecting themes...they are like swirls in a pond, Grasshopper. They start as a tiny focused circle, but quickly expand until they encompass the entire pond! I began acquiring S&Ws in the late 70s- my first was a beautiful brand spankin' new 4" Model 57 with the presentation case. The 57 was stolen a few months later, but I still have the case! I took a hiatus for a few years to raise a family, but later when I finally had a few free dollars, I caught the bug. I love S&W N-frames: Pre-model .357s and .44s and Models 25, 27, 28, 29 in particular, and that became "my theme". However, along came some nice firearms at reasonable prices- vintage K-frames, a Model of 1917, a Model of 1926, even a Colt Python, and...well, the original theme went out the window. Now I also have S&W pistols (1911, M&P .45, 9mm PC Shield for CCW, and others). Every time I try to re-focus on my theme, some other S&W revolver (or pistol) comes along that needs a good home. What else can I say? Enjoy.

Enjoy.
What a great ride! Believe it or not, I've owned many of those over the years. Our interests overlap! My collecting was always dynamic -- meaning that as different guns caught my attention I would sell to buy, or trade to get them. Civil War Era Tip-Up, 1917, Victory Models, (never owned a Registered Magnum, but had some Transition Models), M&Ps, 25s, 27s, 28s, 29s, first year 29, Steel Frame 39 (NIB), Model 520s (some NIB, when they could be had for about $350), first year Model 60 (NIB), just about every pinned barrel stainless steel Smith, K Frames, J Frames, and so on and so on. I won't mention all the other brands.

One problem became -- so many of them really were safe queens. What do you do with a gun you dare not shoot? It's boring. Gradually, as the 1990s drifted into the 2000s, my collecting drifted into a group of about eight that I liked to shoot. My favorite was the Model 25-5. I also love the standard 4" K Frame revolvers -- they fit the hand and earn their keep.

When I got sick and dispirited I gave my guns away, save a couple. Now I have decided to rebuild a small collection to memorialize my collecting and shooting days. They will be for remembering and fondling mostly, and to show respect for S&W, a great innovative company.

Theme: OCD (Old Chiefs Disorder).

I've been through postwar M&P love and Centennial love, and I have a few of each. I'd sell or trade any of them (and some of the other oddballs I've picked up) for another Chiefs Special.

My focus narrowed to Chiefs Specials, and I've been lucky enough to uproot some dandies. I remain on the hunt to fill in holes from every pre-lock year (1950 - 1999). I don't know that I'm truly interested in having 49 Chiefs, and I already have multiples from a single year. Now it's become mostly target of opportunity buys.

Have fun with whatever theme you choose. That'll keep it fresh and interesting.

That would be an awesome collection to behold. He he ... "target of opportunity." Chiefs Specials Targets are hard to find. I think there are Model 60 3" Targets also
aren't there?

Yes, the two Model 60 Targets that pop into my head are 60-4 (.38 Special) and 60-10 (.357 Magnum). There are other newer ones, too.

I stick to blue and nickel (not stainless steel), and my only Target Model is a 36-6 in 3".

Some great ideas listed in this thread.

My collecting theme was to acquire a 'pre' model of each s&w magnum. It turns out that I have a pretty good birth year for a similar theme, so after picking up a '58 Patrolman I've decided to go with birth year .357's for s&w and Colt. I now have some good trade-bait to move forward and just need to start buying lottery tickets again.

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever found a gun corresponding to their exact birthday?

Just lately I bought a Combat Masterpiece with the same birth year (1951) as me. Glad I did, it's a fine revolver. No photos yet.

Finding one with the exact birthday with the same month/day/year seems very difficult.

Took me until my mid to late 50's before I decided to seek out a '58 S&W. Ig turned out to be a nice 6" Highway Patrolman. Now I want the 4'.

Other than that, my theme is S&W or Marlin. Of course that's not the only rule. If I see it & like it, it's part of "my theme". I did the 1911 thing, the bolt action thing and recurve bows, but have only retained one or two of each now. I'll also admit this; I have a Taurus (G2) and a Kel-Tec (PMR 30) that I really enjoy shooting. I'm no snob when it comes to firearms I like.

So really, I guess there's no theme at all.

I've limited myself to pinned barrels - J, K and N frames in .38, .44 Mag, .44 Special, .357, .41 Mag, and .45 Colt. Don't tell my wife how many models, revisions, dashes, prefixes, screws and what not fall into that "limit"...shhhhhhh...

I have had different themes at different times. I started off collecting stainless steel S&W revolvers back in the 70's because that was the "in" thing to do at that time (or so I thought). Fast forward through my "deep sleep" years to 2013... and I discovered 3rd Gens!

But now my 3rd Gen collection is more than sufficient and I have turned my attention back to pre-IL blued revolvers, mostly K-frames and a few J's (No N's other than dear old Dad's Model 28). But even that aspect of my collecting is very nearly complete thanks to a particularly successful 2018.

Along the way, I have veered off into a handful of "mini-themes", some worthwhile, some not so much.

What to turn to next? Honestly, I haven't solved that puzzle yet. I won't have a lot of money to invest in guns in 2019, so the numbers will be way down. I'll likely be doing more selling than buying. Still, I want to make what I do have to spend count!

Themes? I have tried them and found them far too restrictive.
My wife claims I suffer from firearm ADD.
I prefer to think I have expansive interests...........
That can be added to on a moments notice

Well, You left out 2 1/2" and 3 1/'2" and 6 1/2". Now you want blue and nickel.

Frankly I do not see how you are going to get past M27's with 6 pieces, and that is just 1 frame size. You need a bigger safe already

The safe, along with a wife who will leave if I buy any more guns, is what saves me from the exploding collecting themes I'm reading about here. I have one small safe that will fit 5-6 guns and the wife thinks it has one gun in it. She doesn't know the combination, so I'm good for now, but bring in another safe so I can expand?

Happy New Year everyone, and thanks for making me feel so welcome here. I'm old, but new.

If I do have a theme its .357s.

I'm going to sell my 25-3 so I can buy another .357.

Every collecting plan, or strategy I ever tried went out the door in short fashion once I began searching. I'd run into something that was outside my parameters, but so cool, or reasonable that I bought it. Then that opened the door to a larger theme and I scrapped my original plan.

I love the N frames, but I only have 3. One is a nickle 8 3/8 model 57-1 which is my favorite. Another is a blue 6 inch model 25-5. These are the only S&W revolvers that I purchased new. I have all boxes and papers. My last is a 6 inch, blue model 28-2 that I purchased from a member here. Nice gun, cleaned up nice and with a set of real nice target stocks she is a nice example of a working N frame. That’s when I noticed a pattern. All of my S&W revolvers, save a British victory model, have adjustable sights and and target items. Target triggers, hammers and stocks. My theme developed without my actually planning it. Now I need a 586/686 and ...

Default I'm Baack

Well, I vanished for five months. I got interested in other things, including self-publishing and promoting two books. But I kept working on the S&W collecting theme I described when I started this thread.

The idea was to memorialize my shooting and collecting days (I'm disabled now). Having given away and sold most of my collection, I wanted to rebuild a small collection of revolvers that captured some of the variety of features, sizes and finishes that Smith offers ... in one caliber (because total cost was a factor). Here it is.

Model 37 2" .38, J, Blue, Aluminum, Rnd. Butt
Model 65-5 3" .357, K, Stainless, Rnd. Butt
Model 10-8 4" .38, K, Blue, Sq. Butt, PC Magnas
Model 27-2 5" .357, N, Nickel, Sq. Butt, Boughman Sight, Football Targets
Model 14-1 6" .38, K, Blue, Sq. Butt, Patridge Sight, Diamond Targets
-----------------
Model 25-5 6" .45, N, Blue, TS, TT, TH, WO, RR, Football Targets

The years range from 1961 to 1988. The Model 25-5 is there because it was my favorite Smith of all to shoot. The Model 65-5 is not actually in my hands yet. We are in the process of concluding the deal . I've covered barrel lengths, finishes, frames and stocks. Not all of them certainly, but if you look closely and think about it there are quite a few smith configurations or features represented in one way or other on one gun or other.

Congratulations on rebuilding the collection. I am currently enamored with S&as 45 ACP revolvers.

I can usually stick to a theme. I have built and sold several collections as my thoughts have wandered over the years. Civil War carbines, Committee of Safety muskets, Peter White long arms, Colt 1861 and 1860s, you get the idea.
