Default S&W Model 15-2 with Herrett's Grip

I'm usually not a fan of anything other than original factory grips on my vintage S&W revolvers. I recently found these Herrett's on ebay and thought they looked different from the other Herrett's I typically see. They turned out to be beautifully made, fit perfectly and the medium size with front checkering feels great in my hand. Not too big and not too small.

My pre-owned 15-2 came with Pachmayr grips. I bought a set of vintage, period correct diamond magnas to replace them. I also have a set of original diamond target grips, but have to admit that I really like these on my 15-2 and now I'm looking for a round butt version for my model 66 snubby!

Anyone else have have a set of these that they like as much as I do?

Those look great and I like the open grain finish and checkering around the front. I have a few sets of Herretts and have never been disappointed in the fit or finish. Very nice looking 15 too!

Thanks!

The grips had at one time been refinished and the finish was chipped/worn in several areas. I soaked them in acetone, brushed off the old finish and rubbed in a few coats of Tru-oil with light 0000 steel wool in between.

Very nice indeed!! I have a set that I had on my original 1968 Model 28-2 N frame. Very similar but the thumb rest is a bit more pronounced. I think I know where they are. if i can find them I will post a pic. Thanks for the refinishing lesson

I just sent a friend this dark set I believe are Herretts.
On independence day the ladies here all shot with these revolvers before moving to the rifle range.
One is the old thumbrest style.

This is a "before" photo of the grips from the seller. I could clearly see they were in need of light refinishing.

Are these Herrett's??? They fit an N frame, and they were given to me in 1968-69 for a 28-2. I have a 28-2 4" shipping tomorrow, so they may end up back on the same gun 50 years later. Sorry for the bad lighting. No writing on the reverse side

They could be. Several shops made that style in the past. Having purchased several vintage Herrett stocks in the past a characteristic of Herretts is that they fit the frame very well. I have never needed to fill in any frame to grip gaps on the eight or so Herrett grips I have owned. They all have fit snug on old Colt and S&W frames.

Herrett is still in business but only makes custom grips to order. Many of the grips on Fleabay are production grips made years ago. A benefit of the production grips is that the machined checkering is very sharp and good for target pistols. Herretts will also add checkering if you send in the grips.

I found Herrett Shooting Stars like yours fit me the best and collected some NOS from Fleabay. Since I was using them for target revolvers for NRA Distinguished Revolver competition I needed even more grip and stippled the smooth areas and used two thin coatings of Tung oil on the non-checkered areas to seal the wood. The stippling came out looking like Nill grips.

As I said, i have had them for 50 years, and they were given to me, by a lawyer friend that took a shine to me. I was pumping gas in the summer of 68 before college, and he was a customer. I saw a shotgun in the back of his car and asked where he was going. He told me trapshooting, and then he took me a lot, and got me into it. i can't tell you how many 10's of thousands of dollars he ultimately cost me shooting trap. Still have my Perazzi and Ljutic custom stocked comp guns. I shoot for fun now. My eyes need more stationary targets now.

As I recall, they fit a 28-2 just fine. I am going to clean them up and refinish them. No chips or cracks, and nice dark aged walnut

Pete personally I wouldn't refinish your set by what you said.
Putting a couple coats of wax on them.....Yes

Paul, A stellar idea!!!!!! i have a can of Butcher's bowling alley wax. Going to try that first, and a camel hair shoeshine brush.

Checked, no bowling alley wax anymore but plenty of minwax paste for hardwood floors. That should do

Thank you,

Pete

I believe yours are what Herrett's call the TROOPER. Not to be confused
with the Jordan Troopers which are smooth. They offer them with finger
grooves as an option. Still make them to the measurement of your hand.

Thanks, I will look them up.

I did, and i believe they are walnut or black walnut " high thumb rest" Troopers. Early though..... Thank you

Another fan of Herrett grips. My first K frame came with them.
Now most of my revolvers wear the Shooting Stars like the OPs.

The OPs grips are an older version with the checkering going around the inner side.

My friend sent me a picture of them on his gun.

He was quite happy and they do the gun justice. It's an OM with King enhancements.

There are three pairs of them here. I bought the first pair in '69 and they have been refinished, wore the checking off and so I stripped them and sanded them. The finish now is Linseed Oil and mineral spirits. They did a great job on light snub nose revolvers and full loads. I think you will enjoy them and they are very nice.

I'm waiting a vintage set, I purchased on FleaBay one year ago for my m 27. I guess they are old Trooper, I'll see when they will arrive. Why so much time for shipping? Sad, but nobody ships anything from USA to Europe; usually I buy something giving the address of a friend or an uncle who lives there, and.... I wait him when he will come to Europe. Here some pic from the web .
They look astounding

I am a fan of Shooter Stars. Bought a nice set of N Troopers, and they did not work for me. My 10 has highly modified stocks on it. 66-2, just normal ones. Bob

I have always found, and I mean ALWAYS, found that the Herrett's grips are better suited to shooting than the Smith and Wesson Target grips. As nice as the Smith and Wesson Targets are (and they are fabulous in construction and wood used) they do not give as much feel, fit and handling characteristics as do the Herrett's. I put Herrett's on all of my revolvers as I can find them or order them. Great grips.

I have a set of Herrett's Shooting Star stocks on my Model 19-3. I found that they are very comfortable stocks, even with magnum loads. I recently picked up another set with skip-line checkering for my 29-3.
