Default Model 28 with odd stamping

My son has acquired a Model 28 that is nickel finish and in great condition. This was once the duty gun of a Captain in the Florida Marine Patrol back in the 60-70's. The serial number is S2324XX, but right in front of the serial number is the stamping FCP- 11. I know there were some special order nickel guns made for the Florida Highway Patrol, but they were 5" and marked FHP. This gun is a 4". The Florida Marine Patrol was a sister agency to FHP, so I wonder if they had any special order guns made.

The Odd thing is its stamped FCP-11 and not FMP-11. The serial number is set back towards the rear of the grip frame, with the FCP-11 in front of it, so I'm thinking it was made that way. Sorry I don't have a picture to share.

Any info would be appreciated.

Can't answer specifically about the Model 28 you inquired about; however, below is a Florida Highway Patrol Model 27-2 with the "FHP" and number stamping. This will show how S&W marked the FHP guns.

Nickel is notoriously hard to photograph, but the stamping is just above the trigger guard.

That could be a possible agency. I found the Florida Conservation officers were not armed, and later became the Florida Marine Patrol who were armed. The investigation continues.

My son is sending in for the letter and we will see what if anything becomes of that. How long is the waiting period on a response from Roy Jinks?

It varies depending on request load, but figure about 6 weeks. Good luck!

We'd really like to see pics of the gun.

That would help in the ID.

If the good captain, the former owner, is still among the living, ask him or perhaps one of his children about the history of this revolver. Also, try contacting someone at the state capital who oversees law enforcement.

Six weeks is not that long for the letter. Somehow I thought it took much longer. As far a photos I will see if my son can post a few. The Captain is long gone, but the gun was obtained from his daughter who is sons mother in law. She knows he was with the Florida Marine Patrol but had other jobs also. There might be a older photo of him in a different uniform if she can find it.
