Model 27-2 with Racing Stripes
Won this one on GunBroker today. I was able to pick it up since the seller's business is in my vicinity. Nothing like instant gratification. I was able to clean it and remove the racing stripes.
As the story goes the revolver was used as a training aid with some tough to remove red tape as shown in the first picture. With some acetone, finger nails and a wood toothpick the tape was removed without damage to the finish. The gun was used to shoot wax bullets per the description. There must be some truth to it since I also found out the cylinder chambers were lined with cylinder sleeves. The sleeves would not allow loading of either .38 Special or .357 Magnum rounds. After I figured out the issue, I was able push the sleeves out easily with a wood dowel.
It cleaned up nicely. I am a happy camper for well under six hundred bucks.
Here are the before and after pictures.

You didn’t buy it, you stole it.
Congrats on a fine revolver.

Nice work! Thanks for rescuing that poor revolver! Not bad looking now that you’ve gotten a hold of it. Congratulations on your new .357!

Congratulations! I saw that and was following that auction, if I was in the market for a 27 with a 8" barrel, I sure would have bid on it. I have bought a dozen or so firearms from that seller, good people to deal with! I am glad that someone here got that 27. It cleaned up real nice!

Bubba modifications.
I truly can’t believe someone did that to that nice revolver. And hats off to our forum brother for saving it.

I have bought a bunch of firearms from this seller since they are in my neck of the woods. The staff, in person, are always pleasant and nice to meet. Items they sell on GB are usually in better condition than described in the auction. They will also allow you to come by and inspect items up for auction.
Most of the items they sell are LE trade-ins but some like this revolver was a consignment. I have a little background on this one by accident. A couple of weeks ago I went over to inspect a Model 57 they had at auction. Unfortunately, I did not win it. It belonged to a recent widow lady selling here deceased husband's guns. The code on the tag for this gun was the same as that one. It was another of the estate guns.
I do not know what type of training the revolver was used in. I do not know why wax bullets. I do know I checked some past obits and their was a former, years ago, track star at the University of Alabama who died in February with the same last name as on the gun tag. Maybe it was the same person. I do not know. Maybe he was a track coach and used the gun as a starter pistol. It is a far fetched "what if". I do know, there was no apparent harm done to the revolver.
I do save on FFL fees and shipping from this seller but have to pay 10% sales tax. So, I am really not at a competitive advantage. It is over a hundred mile round trip from my home.

lamarw;
First of all I would like to compliment you on your rescue, and restoration of that Classic Mod.27. In my estimation the S&W Mod. 27 is the, "ultimate" classic revolver.
Secondly, A person that would pick, and subject a S&W Mod. 27 to that kind of idiotic, villainous abuse, should be punished by hanging them by one of their most precious body parts, "your Choice", and, slowly beat to death with wet pretzels. My 2¢ worth on the matter.

That's a great find, and very nice on the cleanup job.
Your very lucky those things weren't done in more permanent way.
Congrats.

Most of the firearms that I have bought from them have been police trades, you can decipher from the tags where they came from, for the most part. I have picked up a couple of really good guns that were there on consignment.

Those sleeves look like the ones supplied with simunitions training cartridges to prevent the clambering of live ammunition in training weapons. The .38 version fires a plastic, paint filled projectile using a standard primer for propellant. The little buggers sting. It's very possible that the weapon was used for force on force training and was marked with tape for safety identification. At least they didn't paint the gun or grips, also a common practice.

Glad someone here on the forum picked that beauty up. I saw it, watched it and even threw a low ball bid in - not because I needed another long-tube 27-2, but because, I could see that all it needed was a little TLC. I love a gun with potential... CONGRATS and thanks for taking care of that beautiful revolver.
The long 27's and their long-tube predecessors are some of my very favorite smiths, and they are wonderful to shoot!
Enjoy!
