S&W 38 Special ctg 10-6 Info
Hello All,
I just purchased this gun from a neighbor and would like to know any info anyone might have on it. I know I possibly paid more than what its worth but I didn't try pushing him being that he is 81 years old. He said it was never shot, although from some powder discharge marks although slight I knew it was. Any info would be greatly appreciated. D9431XX
Thank you!

Welcome to the forum.
The Model 10-6, a heavy-barrel iteration of the Military & Police line, was made from 1962 to 1977. The serial puts your gun likely in 1977, near the end of the model and the switch to the 10-8.
It was probably the most widely used police revolver of its time, although yours appears to be the nickel-finished version, which is much less common than the blued one.
Hard to make any definite judgment from one photo, but it looks to be in great shape.

Welcome from NW PA. Looks nice, don't know what too much was, but that would be $500 in a shop around here.

They are great handguns. Mine is 3D137xx, I figure it was made in 1978. When I got it, it was like new except it needed cleaning. It's been shot some since then but works like a champ.

Ooooooh, I don't see a lot of 4" HB 10's in Nickel. That is really nice. Can we ask how much you DID pay? I won't judge. I would probably over pay for that one too if I had the money. Plus you're helping and old guy out, so... you can't go wrong doing that. Even if you paid double or triple or more.

Beautiful gun, and with the box is easily worth $550.

S&Ws are test-fired at the factory before shipment.
If the front of the cylinder has burn rings only on every other chamber your neighbor is correct about it being unfired and the value would be a bit more.
Of course, then you would have to decide if you want to be the one to shoot it for the "first time"...

Around here, that would be a good deal. Well, I just don't see too many 10's in good shape for less than 5 bills. Everything is high up here compared to what I hear about other areas from guys posting on here. Either that or people just lie about how much they can get them for. But I think stuff is just higher in my neck of the woods. It definitely depends on the store, but overall stuff is cheaper elsewhere I think.

Those are nice replacement grips, Jack, in Goncalo alves wood. Very colorful.
Thanks for the view.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, Steelman161......
THIS IS AN ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS REVOLVER. IT MAY HAVE BEEN TEST FIRED AT THE FACTORY, THUS LEAVING THE FAINT EVIDENCE THAT YOU OBSERVE......
YOU MIGHT OPT TO LEAVE THIS REVOLVER AS IS. IT IS PROBABLY WORTH MORE THAN WHATEVER YOU PAID FOR IT, AND IT IS CERTAIN TO APPRECIATE GREATLY IN THE FUTURE. I AM A SHOOTER, NOT A COLLECTOR, BUT I COULD NOT BRING MYSELF TO SHOOT THIS ONE......
I WOULD LOOK FOR A CLEAN LIGHTLY USED, AND WELL MAINTAINED REVOLVER TO SHOOT, WITH A CLEAR CONSCIENCE. THIS ONE WOULD SIT IN MY SAFE WITH A COAT OF RENAISSANCE WAX ON IT. I WOULD NEVER CYCLE THE ACTION, TO AVOID MAKING EVEN THE SLIGHTEST TURN LINE ON THE CYLINDER......
WHEN I WAS 81 YEARS OLD, AND MY STEWARDSHIP OF THIS BEAUTY WOULD BE COMING TO AN END, I WOULD GIFT IT TO A DESERVING HEIR, OR SELL IT TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER ON GUN BROKER........
