Model 66 no dash, value help please...
Found a 66 no dash at a LGS where I'm moving to. Price is $599 OTD. Didn't get ser. number, but was told around 80-81 (if my memory serves). Gun was in excellent cond, but not safe queen. Some muzzle wear but overall very nice. Timing/lockup was as good as new. Didn't appear shot very much. Is $599 OTD a reasonable price? Was looking at a 4" used 686-4 @ $549 until he showed me the 66... No box...

4"? That's about right. The 2.5" will bring more. Just my worthless opinion.

If it has the original football target grips, in good shape then go directly to the shop NOW! And buy it.

Check for endshake on both guns. I avoid LEO trade-in's generally because of past experience. I would take the 686 over the 66 if I could only buy one. Prices quoted aren't bad... but I would deal and see if a 2 for one price like maybe 1K would work.

Either get both, or get the 686-4. Also is the 66 a 4". I don't know the prices around your area, but that would be a steal here in Arizona.

Need to know barrel length and type of grips to say for sure, but if this is a common 4" gun with factory grips (especially the "football cutout" targets mentioned above) that is a reasonable price. I used an old LEO trade-in Model 66 for a project a few years ago and still sorta miss having it around.

The model 66 no dash became the 66-1 around 1976-1977. So you may be looking at a 66-1, if that's the correct date you were told. If it IS indeed a 4" no dash, it could have a stainless rear sight, making it more valuable. If the choice were mine, I would take the model 66, even if it is a -1. That is a great price for one, around here that would easily be a $750+ gun all day long. Good luck.

Go back and get it. Most 66 aficionados prefer the -1 over the no dash but either is one of the best S&W ever made. If it has stainless sights that's a steal but remember there was a reason they discontinued the stainless sights, they were awful.

It is a 4" model and I think I'm wrong on the date-the 686 was probably the 80's model. I was in a hurry, as the better half was at the salon getting her hair done and I was waiting for her call to come and get her!! LOL There was little-No endshake and lockup was tighter than Fort Knox! The 686 was also a 4" and they had a used 6" 686-7/8 as well.
I would really prefer a 67 to the 66, as I wouldn't shoot any 357 ammo through it. All my revolvers are 38 Special-5 S&W and 1 Speed Six (Ruger).

Don't know about the 66, but I hear 66-1's are going for around $2,500.
My dash 1 was only 'bout sixfitty.

As an update, I purchased the 66 No Dash this evening-$599 OTD. No box or other accessories. Ser. #4K68925, so any help dating would be appreciated. Will try to post pics, if I can remember how!! Been a while since I owned a 357 Magnum revolver!!

The great book says that serial number dates to 1974.

You're welcome. The book, btw, is the fantastic Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas, now in it's Fourth Edition. Buy one wherever good books are sold.
You can get lost in it for hours!
