Default Model 48-4 at LGS

My LGS here in San Antonio has some interesting vintage models of a very nice variety. And naturally, they have a whole line of modern day plastics, after all, they need to stay in business somehow.

They usually have some very nice S&Ws, in fact, I just purchased a late model 1917 commercial from them, now one of my prize possessions.

They have a Model 48-4 in there that I have looked at from time to time. Interestingly, they have it somewhat hidden, as opposed to that excellent 1917 which they had prominently displayed when you enter the store. I've been looking for a nice something in .22 magnum (no autos, thank you) for some time.

They are asking $799 for this 48-4, which sounds like a pretty good price to me, don't know if they have the box for it or not. Attached is a picture of it from their website. It's pinned, so I believe that means it was made between '77-'82 or thereabouts. I've handled it, seems to be as good as it looks in this photo.

I'd be interested to here some thoughts, I got some pretty darned good advice on that 1917 I purchased recently. In general, this LGS always has pretty good deals, just not the greatest customer service, which I've discovered to be the norm these days.

I really enjoy my 48 with a 8 3/8" barrel. The 22 mag just barely pulls the 22 into a reasonable hammer on a steel gong at 100 yards.

The price seems reasonable if condition is good. The $799 price is begging for you to make him an out the door offer.

Prices for 22 mag ammo is high and availability is terrible.

$799 might be a bit high where I shop but not much. The four inch ones show up less often than the longer barrels so there's some premium for that. I'd try to buy it for a little less but probably wouldn't quibble too much if I really wanted it. I'm looking for a six inch to fill out the set so would probably pay that much for a nice one; definitely would if box/papers are there too. Good luck.

That seems to be about the normal asking price on 48s. I too would make an offer, as the 4 inch models are the least common variety. If box and papers or a 22lr cylinder is also with gun then I would say price is right on. They did back in the day upon request fit 22lr cylinders to the 48's making them a perfect plinking tool.

When I lived near SA about thirty years ago, everything was reasonably priced, particularly firearms. These days, overpricing pretty much everything is the norm. This shop is one of the few places I have seen that have what seem like reasonable prices. Gun shows here are the worst. Rare day is it that you can find a good deal on an old S&W. Although every now and then it'll happen; I got a pretty good deal on an old Model 60 not too long ago, but still felt it was overpriced.
