Default Mod.28

Located a 28-2 or sale and I have seen a couple of images. It is a 4" with plenty of holster wear. There is no box or original grips and there is number etched into the gun. The grips are by Grashorn with no bark. The asking price is $625. It would be a shooter or woods gun for me. Jump in with some opinions, and THANK YOU.

Price might be a little high if the holster wear is heavy. Not high enough to stop me from acquiring it.

Seems a little high for the condition described. Maybe $500?

May be a little high but not much.

Rule of thumb is that any N-Frame in good working order is worth $500. Add a hundred or so for the nice stocks. The 4" barrel usually pushes up the price too. That brings us pretty much up to his asking price.

Use your negotiating skills properly and you may get a bargain. If you don't really care one way or the other about the stocks, you could offer him $500 w/o them.

There has been a 28-2, 4" for sale at multiple gun shows here. Very nice shooter grade. Has smooth presentation target stocks on it. Asking price was $625. Evidently too high, because it has been seen by many.
Based on that, I think that your example is overpriced. (but what do I know?) Let us know how you make out. Bob

A 4" Model 28 for $625, great. What is probably an evidence number etched onto the gun, not so great. If you can live with the damage, then ok buy it. Do not entertain thoughts of refinishing, get a better revolver for the money that you would have spent.

I recently bought an excellent 98% condition M28 4" barrel off this forum with no grips for $550 shipped.

If the number is etched it is probably a police trade in from a small department. Evidence numbers are usually scratched w the point of a pocket knife. A lot of officers aren't gun people and could care less.

Look at your local market and GB to see if price is right on a shooter grade M28. Plus or minus on the grips depending on whether you like them. I'm not familiar w the maker but since you said no bark I assume some type stag grips which are a good trading stock plus in my mind. I traded into a M65 at $450 value that was wearing some really nice stags. Walked across the show and got $300 cash plus a set of wood Hogues for the stags. They were really nice stags and the grip dealer had a customer who was really hot for a set of k frame stags that day. He flipped them for $450 later that day so he bought me lunch. Figured I was now in that M65 for $100 when they were bringing about $300 from a dealer. About 6 months later got $350 cash plus kept the Hogues when I sold it.

So what is that M28 worth? You have to decide.

The numbers could also be someone's social security number. At one time, a lot of local PD's were loaning out electric pencils so the home owner could mark items of value, like guns and big screen TVs, so the home owner could prove ownership if the item ever turned up during an arrest.

If you subtract the Grasshorn grip price, the gun is $480.00.
Given that, it is ballpark in price. Since it's a shooter/woods gun
you won't cry so much if it got a sctatch or ding. Just hit it with
cold blue when you get it and be happy.

If he will not sell the gun w/o the stags and you still want it that way, you could pretty easily sell them on this forum.

As to the mark:
It has already been stated this to be a carry/shooter. Unless you think it has been stolen from a police evidence room, what difference does the mark make?

So did you buy it?

Obviously, some guys are finding better deals. Maybe if you wait you will find such a deal yourself. Of course, that depends on how much time you have.

Waiting for more images, several days ago the seller told me to STAY TUNED. Must be there is a big commercial headed my way. I have not heard anything. Just waiting. There is very little I can do but wait.

Personally, I would not consider it. I recently bought a 4" and a 6" on this site , no box, and for not much more money, but they are fine examples of lightly used non abused mod 28. For 625.00 grasshorns or not you can do better, and for not much more you can do much better. Put an ad in the WTB section. OH, and BTW , IMO you are after one of the finest guns S&W ever made.

Less than a year ago, I found a 27-2 4 " with rubber pachs on it along with 3 Ts, for $650. A little muzzle bluung loss and the normal turn line. It had a pin head sized spot of rust under the pachs that turned into a non issue. Good things come to those with patience maybe but P&R N frame .357s are getting tougher to find every day. Used to find one in every gun shop and pawn shop every day , those days are gone.
