Default K-38 Masterpiece M14-3 1971

New to me K-38 Masterpiece M14-3 1K97005 dates to 1971.
Original box label shows that it shipped with the target stocks, hammer and trigger:

That is some kind of pretty! I had one just like it that I bought new in the early 70's. It was one of those stupid $#@&(!! split seconnd decisions that was made to trade it, when you really should have been keeping it. Enjoy!!!

You are late to the party! K-38 Masterpiece M14-3 1971 I’ve built most of my collection around this cartridge (and 357 mag). So versatile and fun to shoot. The target masterpiece is top of the food chain for me!

I am on the hunt for one with the 3 T’s too.

That is gorgeous. I’ll get my K38 tomorrow but it won’t look near as nice as yours! Please update us with some targets. I hope it shoots as good as it looks!

Especially nice target stocks. The wear on the ejector rod says it has been shot quite a bit, but looks like it has been carefully cared for. I have a 14-3 that doesn't miss what it is pointed at. Yours too, probably.

That’s a beautiful 14. They’re my favorite model.

Is it just me or is the locking bolt for the end of the ejector rod protruding farther from its housing on the barrel than normal?

I'm not sure it seems to move and function normally.
Here's a picture with the vintage S&W holster it came with. Also these Pachmayr grips that will never be used:

Yes somebody definitely bought it to shoot, but they definitely took good care of it. It was nice to buy a gun of this age that came clean and well oiled. I’ve received a few grungy ones lately.
The guy I got it from only had it a few weeks so it was most likely an estate purchase.

You are right comparing it to a picture I found online. I wonder why that would be maybe needs a new spring? Mine looks to be pushing further forward. Doesn't look like something that would be easy to replace. Seems to work fine so I'll probably let it be. Good eye spotting that detail.

It's part of my OCD! lol

I did go double-check my 14-3 before posting. You might make sure the ejector rod is tight. It should be reverse threaded. If it's tight and the cylinder locks up tight I would shoot it and enjoy!

I just got it a few days ago and haven’t really had time to check it out. It locks up pretty tight but I did notice the gap between the cylinder and forcing cone seems larger than usual. Before shooting it I will take it apart and see if anything is loose.
Thanks

pd1964, you are starting out right on top of the mountain as far as .38 Special revolvers go. Let us know if it shoots as good as it looks. They usually do.

You're going to love shooting it. My first experience with 38spl was out of my j-frames and Colt's DS. Shooting from a K-frame is powder-puff in comparison!
Beautiful piece and nice pics.

K-frame .38 Specials are an absolute joy to shoot. That one is a stunner.

This thread was resurrected after about 5 1/2 months to just admire the gun some more. I'm sure that by now it is in a place of honor for pd1964 and that he is enjoying the quality and workmanship S&Ws of this vintage bring. Hope it's getting some range time in spite of the season up there in the "Great White North."

I dunno if it is usual , btw I notice that the two ampersands rolled on the barrel and the frame are different. Lazy one in on the frame.

Wow, what a beautiful example of a 14-3! Mine shows a bit more wear but in keeping with the sterling Model 14 reputation, it shoots like a dream.
