Default Wood stock ID

I am trying to find what gun the wood stocks came off that do not match the gun they are now on. The numbers on the right stock are 139 over 945, so I guess the gun they came off was 139945.

Well, they (it) came off of an N-Frame. That's really all that can be said. Could have been 139945 with no prefix, S139945 or N139945. Could have been any of several specific models, some numbered, some named models. Until the early 1980s serial numbers were assigned by specific model and the same number could be duplicated on each of several models.

Alk's got it right. Definitely for an N frame. Most likely an S prefixed gun based on the blue washer and the style of letters stamped on it. I am thinking that by the time the factory was sending out N prefixed guns they weren't stamping the numbers on the back anymore, but I may be wrong.

Easy way to know is if there is a diamond on the chckered side though.

If there is a diamond around the escutcheon, the serial number of the gun the stocks were fitted to would be S139945 since the panel looks like it was made for an N-frame revolver. The revolver could be any of the N-frames offered in the mid-1950s that shipped with Magna stocks (1950 44 or 45 Target, ".357" Magnum, Highway Patrolman, etc.).

Didn't Smith sell their own original stocks as aftermarket products? I once had a pair of K frame magnas that had numbers stamped on them that were clearly not serial numbers. If that was to be the case then such stocks would be "correct" for any period matching gun that wears them.
