Another "I wasn't really planning on getting another gun..." thread
Was at a sort-of-local GS today (it was local before I moved) and I dropped in to pick up some ammo they had on sale. Grabbed the ammo, looked in the showroom cases to see if there was anything interesting amidst the plastic, said hi to the fellas, and then I made my mistake.
"Hey Carson, you got anything interesting in the back?"
Now, he knows I look for S&W revolvers. He thinks for a second or two, starts to say he didn't think so but stopped himself and said hold on a minute. Goes in the back and comes out with a small pistol rug.
Opens it up and the first thing I see is a 50 count box of Remington centerfire ammo and a J-Frame. A flat latch J-Frame. Hmmm... I don't have any flat latch guns. Model 36? 37? I pick it up and swing open the cylinder to make sure it's unloaded, and "HUH?" SIX shots?
I'm looking at Model 30-1, in 32 S&W Long. Which as far as self-defense goes has been surpassed long ago by more modern cartridges. So I'm thinking "Nah, I don't really need it." But I sat there and looked at it. And it was in pretty nice shape. And I looked at it some more.
Then he told me how much. And I thought about it. Thought some more. Asked him if that could be the out the door price to save me 10% sales tax. Annndddd... I bought it.
So now, for $250, I have a light recoil gun for my daughter to shoot, working her way up from a Model 34-2 , to this 30-1, to a Model 38 Bodyguard.
Any of you feel like opening up your Standard catalog and telling me when it was made? S/N 738549

Very nice, that’s one outstanding deal, there! Careful, the little .32’s can get addictive.

I'm going to estimate around 1958-59. The 3" I just bought was a 1971 30.1. I just can't seem to pass up any nice 32. even the black powder ones.

Great Purchase. The little .32's are a hoot to shoot. Wish I had not sold the couple I had.

Did he let you keep your mask on while you were doing the paperwork? You literally stole that gun. I paid almost the same for one almost identical to it five or six years ago before prices took off. My youngest niece has it now for EDC and I wouldn't give her ANYTHING that wasn't up to the job. You might check with Georgia Arms for their JHP ammo, suitable for close encounters of the "worst kind."

A beautiful Smith, and in the right hands a viable self defense gun. A hit with a 32 beats a miss with a larger caliber.

You did very well even w/o the ammo! Did you get the gun rug too? I wouldn't even have dickered on that one. Best deal I've heard of in the past year!
It's a beauty!
The -1 (1st J frame) wasn't introduced until Jan 1961. They were still shipping Model 30 I frames at the same time. So based on #s I have with known shipping date, it likely didn't ship for a year or two after Jan 1961.

This is one of those deals where everyone asks themselves “why can’t 8 run into a deal like that?” And to think Carson probably gave someone $100 for that gun.

Good Deal I Think
A S&W revolver .32 or other in this condition for $250, I think they call that a no brainer. Here is a M30-1 2.25" I was considering selling and when I checked out GB for previous sales they were going for $600+ in 95% condition which I think mine is. .32 caliber seems to be a hot ticket at the present and I would consider yourself fortunate. I know I by using GB as a comparison to this example is a stretch but how often are you going to roll into your local pawn shop or dealer and find one of these available? Unfortunately when wanting to see a quantity of any specific S&W revolver model on line seems to be the best source these days. I think you did well.

He told me they were into it for $200, but it had sat in the back for weeks because some of the employees kept saying they would buy it, but none had followed through. I guess he knew I would.

Yes, got the gun rug too. It's pretty nice as well. Kind of a tan suede with a fuzzy lining.
I figured it would be after 1961 because of the -1, and Wikipedia told me they stopped making them in 1976. So a fifteen year span for the dash-ones.
The ammo box had four rounds missing. We were going "four???" until my brain figured out this is probably the second fifty round box. 54 rounds comes out to 9 cylinder's worth.
It's funny. The thing that really made me buy the thing was the diamond grips.

Actually not discontinued until 1991 after being combined under the same model # as the 32 Regulation Police model which had the sq butt. Versions are still made that also shoot the 32 H&R Mag and past limited runs that shot the newer 327 Fed Mag!
