I Never Knew...
I was in the Cabelas in Wheeling yesterday (huge store, a flagship) and saw what I thought was a mis-labeled S&W N-frame.
It was labeled a 29-2, but had a full-length underlugged barrel. There was a Tasco sight on it and the mount covered up where the pin would be if it were a pinned barrel.
I brought it to their attention, thinking it was a 29-6 or something, but he pulled it out and sure enough, under the yoke it was stamped 29-2. I did not think to look and see if the cylinder was recessed or not, I was kinda stunned.
Did Smith & Wesson make a full-lug 29-2, or could it be a re-barreled gun?
They also had a full-length lugged barrel 629-2 in stainless with an unfluted cylinder. Did they have full-length underlug barrels in the -2 series?

I don't believe they ever did. I'm sure the revolver you were looking at was a factory Mis-marked gun. This happens from time to time, and generally does not effect value either way.

Maybe someone swapped the barrel.

I'm pretty sure the model 29 "Classic Hunter" has a full underlug.

Maybe an old 29-2 frame was found and utilised for this gun.

Yeah, barrel swap was the first thing I thought of. But I'm no expert on what they all put out.

S&W did not make a 29-2 with a full underlug. The barrel has been changed.

^ That’s exactly what I was thinking. It had a 29-2 period (football) stock on it, and the blued finish was a very nice but darker blue, not royal blue.
Glad to see my initial thought was correct, thank you!

Wouldn't a 29-2 have a pinned barrel?

Yes it generally would, but the 629-2 would not. The only 629 with a pinned barrel was the 629 with no dash.

MY 2 CENTS...
While re-boots are all the rage, a (kinda/sorta) COPY of a vintage classic does not make it so. NOT being able to post pics myself I hate to say it but, pics of the gun in question, by the OP or it didn't happen. I wouldn't put anything past someone that mounted a Tasco to a "vintage" 29.

The Tasco was on the supposed 29-2, and it covered up where the pin would be if indeed it were a pinned barrel. It is a mount that covers up the frame on both sides right where the pin would protrude.
It is inside a Cabelas 3 hours away from me, or I’d post a picture. It did indeed happen.
The 629 I mentioned looked EXACTLY like the one pictured above, so that explains that one.
If I’m near that Cabelas next week, I’ll swing by and see if it has a recessed cylinder. I’ll know immediately, because the gap on a recessed cylinder to the frame (on the firing pin side, the rear) is far smaller than it is on a non-recessed cylinder. They were wanting $999.99 for it.
I just got a P&R 6.5” nickle 29-2 which I’d rather have anyway, so I’m not in the market, but I always look in the cases to see what vintage S&Ws have come in just because I never tire of looking at S&W revolvers!

I looked at the photos in the gun library. It looks like a fun gun, but the barrel has been replaced with the full lug. The modification looks to be well done and my guess is that it is a shooting machine...
Here is the Cabella's description:
"Description: Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 fitted with later model full underlug barrel and Tasco Pro Point electronic Red Dot sight. Remains excellent throughout. No box."

NOTHING PERSONAL JM.
My post sounded a bit harsh, that was not my intention. Just saying, trying to make a CORRECT diagnosis without the gun in hand, or multiple good quality pics of specific areas makes it tough. IT IS NOT that I do not believe you & the technical stuff/ S&W minutia/trivia is over my head anyway. A bad usage of words on my part.
