Default Saw a Nice 28-2

Browsing my local small shop today. Had a very clean 28-2 4”. Pinned and recessed. Super clean stocks. Don’t know if they’re numbered to the gun. I recall the number being N517— I believe. Pinned and recessed means pre 1982, right?

He’s a good guy. Put it to the side. $425. Have to sell something else to justify it but it was calling to me. Never owned an N frame.

Nah. I know it’s a good price but with kids probably needing braces in the next year or so dropping $450 when I have reduntant things to sell doesn’t seem right. As I get older, the classic stuff just appeals to me more long term. I have a Model 60 that might go to find it. It’s super nice but so is the 28. And I just don’t shoot the 60 as well as the 640.

For $450 buy it now.......if you need $$$s later for braces..... either gun should sell for more.

What part of the Commonwealth are you in...... a really nice 4" 28 was going for $500-600 here near the Burgh.... haven't seen another for sale in awhile.

I have four of those things.
3 had braces already.
Try to find a way.
Guns appreciate better than my bank account everyday.
Congratulations and Enjoy the 28 and kids.

The owner is a good guy. I watched him out it in the safe. He’s closed Sunday and Monday. I’ll stop in Tuesday. I fully intend to get it.

Lay it away? It would give you more time to pay it off. A little here a little there makes it less painfull. If shops didn’t offer it, my collection would be about nill. I don’t have the cash to plunk down at one time.

Why worry about braces? If its a boy, he will probably get at least one or two knocked out anyway. You can always tell your buds that you might have a bucked tooth kid, but you got a Model 28 at a steal!! They will understand. LOL, just kidding of course. I know kids come first, but that sounds like a great deal. Don't let it get away

At one time, I was paying child support on three kids and both daughters (different mothers) got braces at the same time.

I didn't buy many guns for quite a while.

I sold one a few years ago, that had the box and papers, but not the original stocks for $650.00, and the buyer didn't blink twice.

I put so many guns on layaway that my local gun store has a slot in back with my name on it.

That 28-2 sounds like a deal. Last 4" 28 I saw was $699, and had some honest holster wear. I had just bought a 28 no dash and couldn't swing it. Hope to find a 4" at that price someday. Congratulations!

4" N frame is the ultimate.

Enjoy that 28 and check with Kurac for a set of cokes in nice wood for it.

Well, I grabbed it today. Model 28-2 4" barrel, serial number N 517928. Not numbered to Magna stocks, but the numbers are close. Didn't really think they would number since I read that wasn't a priority at all on the 28 as it was on the 27. Gun is amazingly clean. Couple of tiny blemishes on two spots, but no blue loss at all. Date of birth would be good if anybody has it. I'll post pics later. Camera is dead.

I often wonder how I made it this far in life without a Highway Patrolman.

Will do. One thing I'm not used to is such a large gap from the front of the cylinder to the frame.

Sounds like the beginnings of a good country song, Gil. You can probably find somebody out there in SW VA to put it to music for you, or it's not that far to Nashville!

BTW, how's your ole dog doing? Did you ever get your old pickup off the blocks and running yet? Is that a train whistle I hear in the background? ;

Great, really great. I don't know why I wanted a Mod 28 more than most Smiths but I did. Took me a long time to find one I really wanted and I snagged it a couple of years ago. Something about holding that N frame. You know you've got a revolver in your hand and not a toy. What a gun. Stiff trigger but I'm told it was made that way purposely. Anyway, the way it is is the way it stays. Happy for you. You'll love it. Definitely the epitome of a Smith & Wesson revolver, or I think it is.

Thanks. I'm excited. Funny how the excitement of a "new gun" never gets old. I've been holding the thing since I got it home. It is a beast! I took some pics but they suck. The gun doesn't look anywhere near what it should. Me taking the pic blocks out the light from above and there's a shadow. I'll try again tomorrow. It's raining here now but a cloudy day would give better light.

It looks pretty much like Kalamazoo's but he has Target stocks and mine has Magna's. No color on the front sight which kind of surprised me. Serrated trigger. Looks like case hardened hammer and trigger. No carbon ring on front of cylinder. Barely a turn ring, and most of that is probably from me. When I was picking it up there was a guy there checking out a pretty mint Model 29. He saw what I had and said he had 5 N frames, 3 model 27's and 2 model 28's. Said he had never seen one as clean. I stepped outside while the check was being done to make a phone call and when I came back the owner said if I ever tire of it to let him know and he would buy it back.. I'm pretty sure the other customer told the owner to call him if I ever sold it back. I got it for $425. $455 after tax and PICS check.

Any idea as to DOB?

Picked this one up a month ago. I had to pay a bit more than you did, but I think this for sure is on of the top revolvers S&W ever made. Good luck with yours. You will love it

As the others have mentioned, it would be hard to beat that price. There has been a 28-2, 4" at the local gun show since last year for $625.
I have a 6" no dash. Bought it in 2011 for $475 with rubber grips. Have diamond targets and magnas for it now.
You will sure enjoy the 28. Keep us posted. Bob

“I took some pics but they suck. The gun doesn't look anywhere near what it should. Me taking the pic blocks out the light from above and there's a shadow.”

I fought light for a while when taking pictures of my Smiths. I now wait for a full sun day, then find a shady spot and take my pictures in the shade. Eliminates the shadows and provides a good even light on the gun surface.
May give that a try.
Congrats on a nice buy

Here are some pics. Best I could do. Gun looks basically unused.

Also, any idea as to date of birth?

My God, is that cylinder fat! Never realized such a difference in the N frames. It clunks open like a safe and the open cylinder looks like a pizza pie.

I only have a lowly 28-3 six inch but I sure do like shooting that gun.

I’m really liking the 28-2. Haven’t shot it yet but will soon. I’ve been watching other auctions of 28’s on gunbroker and they’re all selling for more than the $425 I paid for mine, and they’re all in far more used condition. One just sold on gunbroker that was in similar condition as mine for $600.

But why are 686’s going for more? Is an L frame .357 mag, which never came pinned and recessed as mine is, and which are far newer a more desirable gun? 686’s are going for north of $650 to even start the bidding.

Yeah. I stopped in the shop again. Owner asked me if I shot it yet and I said not yet. He again did he’d buy it back if I wanted. I think he knew he had it too low. But I bet you he wouldn’t even give me the $455 out the door I paid.

He also had a 686 7 shot with 4 inch barrel. I think it was a dash 5. No lock but no firing pin on hammer. Came with Dead night sights and a safariland duty holster. It was a cops gun. Nice shape. But he wanted $525 for it. Why $100 more than the 28-2 I bought?

WOW, buddy. That is really nice one, and a steal at $425.

Congratulations on a great buy and a fine gun.

I'd go back and buy that 686 if it's still there. A SS 7 shot pre-lock 357 L frame 4" is worth the extra 100 bucks over the HP. You're off to a very nice .357 collection..

Can’t. Owner said he was taking it home himself and my gun purchases are on hold for a while. Bought 4 in the last three months. Good thing wife can’t tell the difference between a Glock and a Model 10.

And for some reason, the 7 shot doesn’t appeal to me. I would have preferred a 6 shot. No new speedloaders to buy.

For that price, don't collect 200 as you pass go - buy it NOW!
