586-5 in .38 spl.
I have a 586-5 S&W revolver in .38 special 2 1/2 full lug barrel.I was told that that is a rare revolver in that caliber. I like to find out more about it , how many were produced, the year that model came out and the value.

From your descripton that sounds like one of the Brazilian export models. 1993 was the year for those and the serial number should start with BPY. I'll let one of the experts on these fill in the value info. I almost bought one from a now passed dealer at the time but just couldn't get excited about a .38 only L frame though I understand the allure to collectors.
If you have the original box it should be blue paper-cardboard actually. There might be a product code on it and that would nail it. Don't have the Standard Catalog with me at the moment to provide what that is. Might get more info in the next subforum down; 1980-Present.

Product code for your 2 1/2" 586-5 should be 103497. These were the first batch of .38 Spl 586's for Brazil from 1993. There was a second run of Brazil export guns (used the same product codes - 6"=103499 / 4 1/4"=103498) from 1997 with a serial prefix of CCE. Strangely enough these were designated 586-4's.
I've expressed my opinion before as to value and I'll restate that I believe that these are only of interest to collectors if complete - gun/box/docs. Shooters want the dual cartridge capability of the regular 586/686 line. I bought mine as a shooter - at a shooter price - and use it for IDPA. Your 2 1/2" gun may garner more interest as these tend to be rarer than the other two barrel lengths.
