Confused about age of a mod 14-3
I have a mod 14-3 that was sold to me as a 1966 production. The serial # is 3K253xx. From what I can tell, the model 14 switched to 14-4 in 1967 but the serial # would suggest a 1972 build date. What am I missing?

Your not missing anything 1966 production would mostly be a 14-2 and the ser# you gave would be 1971-72.

Just checked the S&W 4th edition, there doesn't seem to be any numbers in front of the K prior to 1970

Production of the 14-3 started in 1967 and ended in 1977 according to the 4th edition.

FWIW The 14-3 ship dates, in my database, run from April 1969 to September 1977. Your serial number falls around May/Jun 1972.

Thanks gentlemen,
Didn’t realize that the 14-3 model continued into the 1970’s. It appears I have a ‘72
