I have attended several estate sales in this area where
there were lots of guns the heirs to the estate were
selling. It is sad in a way the owner never used some
of these guns. Depending on who is in the crowd these
guns may go for a bargain or to high, at least for me.
So I shoot all of mine and have given some away to
family.

So true...and IF the firearm is ever returned to the owner it will probably have a case# engraved on the side.

I shoot the 66 snubs...won't carry them. No point in me carrying a pretty gun if it has to be hidden away. Besides, my stone cold reliable soulless throw-away Glock holds 16 rounds of 10mm, and it's easy to replace.

So we spend thousands of dollars on our vehicles to beat them to death to go back and forth to work but we can't shoot a 750 dollar gun? Weird.

IMHO.

Yes, smith's are not hyundai's and keep their value better. But still, it's just a tool. If a nice smith gets totally wore out, it would have to have a heck of a lot of rounds through it. Plus you can still get them fixed. And if it really truly got wore out, you slap it up on the wall to still look at. Because a gun with honest to goodness wear are the best looking ones. But stainless? I mean. It's not going to be THAT bad unless you throw it down a gravel driveway or something.

I wouldn't carry a nice gun of high quality and vintage status like that, but I would shoot it now and then. I won't own a vintage gun unless I shoot it to make sure it functions like it should. But vintage S&W's always work good, right? Wrong. I have a 1968 era model 36 three inch that's about 98%+, original factory everything, but despite it having bank vault lock up, great bore and being very accurate, there was an issue with the ejector rod fitting quite right. It required minimal work, but I could never know it was working like it should til I shot it. Since I've test fired it after the repair, I have complete confidence in the gun, should I ever need it.

BUT, that's the extent to which I've shot that gun. I enjoy owning that gun without shooting it...just like a coin collector enjoys owning coins without spending them.

If I want to carry a a 3" model 36, I have another example I can use: a good working, lightly used, but improperly stored gun that had much surface rust and pitting on the exterior surfaces. Interior, cyl. chambers and bore were fine. I paid $185 for that gun last year, sanded off the rust, and it's an outstanding carry gun that I don't worry about scratching.

Do coin collectors carry their nicest coins around in their pocket? NO. Then why should a gun collector do so with his nicest guns?
