Default 28-2 Proper Grips

I recently grab a 6" 28-2, S242XXX, which I think makes it a 1964 or 1965 production. I would think this year would come with diamond Magnas, but currently it has what I think are regular Magnas on it.

Which grips should it have on it? Thanks!

I'm thinking diamond magna's. Take off the right side grip and see if the serial number matches that of the gun. Magna's were numbered to the gun.

Welcome to the Forum.

Do you have the box? Usually, M28s came with standard hammers and triggers.

Sadly I did not get the box. This one has target hammer and target trigger.

The grip is stamped with a serial, but it does not match the gun.

That is a great looking HP.i do not like the word "if". If bull frogs had wings their butt would not bump the ground when they land. If your HP shipped with a target hammer and trigger, it's very posdible it shipped with target stocks (with the diamond around the screw) . Targets would not have been numbered to the gun in most cases. As happens, the stocks could have been mined to enhance the orofit of some one, that era of stocks are pricey on E-bay. Only a letter will tell you if it shipped that way and i do not believe I would bother. It would look better with target stocks if your hand size matched, worse if hand size is wrong.
Enjoy your 28-2, they are wonderful revolvers.

Thanks for the insight! I'll keep my eye out for diamonds of some variety and go from there.

While I wouldn’t know without a letter (or the box), this 28-2 vintage 1968 does wear “era correct” diamond targets. I can’t warm up to N frames that don’t sport target stocks.

I have a 4" and a 6" HP. You will love it, and it is a beauty. I believe it should have diamond magnas. I doubt that it came from the factory with a TT, & TH. These were designed to be service revolvers and basically a poor man's M27. Look on the frame under the grips for any stamping that might indicate a factory retrofit of the orig trigger and hammer. While probably not factory new, I consider that to be a nice upgrade if factory done. Back in the day, S&W would make all sorts of requested modifications for peanuts. Especially if you were a LEO. I probably brought half a dozen pieces back to the factory for modifications.

ENJOY!!!!!

What kind of stamping would the factory put to indicate a retrofit?

Not sure, maybe an M or an R. Post a list of all markings under the grips if you can, and maybe both side of the frame pics with grips off. as close up as possible

Here are pics of the frame under the grips. On one side I see a 4, a W, and something at the top left that I can't recognize. On the other I think I see a very small K, but it's hard to tell.

Diamond Magnas would be correct for a 28-2 of that vintage. I have a 28 no dash from 1960. It came with rubber grips when I got it. Have a set of diamond targets for it, and recently picked up a set of diamond magnas for next to nothing in great shape. Am sure I will put the targets back on. Enjoy that 28! Bob

I have a 28-2 with S serial number and I put a set of John Culina Maple target grips on it. I'm not a fan of Magna grips.

IME, the word "diamond" associated with S&W grips justify a huge increase in starting bids on eBay. Unless being a collector and diamond grips are a "must", being a shooter, I would install "no diamond" S&W target grips instead. Just my dos centavos.

Thanks for the info Bob! Those grips look so much better than the rubber ones. It is hard to argue against targets, especially with the hammer and trigger.

You make an excellent point. I wouldn't say it's collector quality: the finish isn't perfect and there is no box or any proof it got the hammer and trigger from the factory. I do like to keep them looking original though; maybe I'll get lucky and find some cheap.

Back in the day, a local shop had Smith factory parts, carded hanging on a freestanding circular display stand. Hammers, triggers and such. Never saw another before or since.Fishmans sporting goods in Springfield IL. Late seventies.

Others will chime in, but I’m not sure the model 28 stocks were numbered to the gun. Being a more budget friendly version on the Model 27, not as much attention to detail was given. I just got a mint 28-2 4” barrel. No box or docs but looks 99%. It dates to 1978. Standard magna stocks have a very close serial number but no match.

28-2's are a wonderful gun. My 28 dates to 1970-1972. I haven't been able to pinpoint the date exactly (not that it matters that much). They seem abundant around here at times and then you don't see them for a while. I would love to have a 6" version
