Prices for 29-2???
Hello all,
So I have decided (thanks to input from this forum) to look for a nice 29-2, 6.5 bbl, blued revolver as my "Dirty Harry" gun to add to my small collection instead of a new "classic".
Been watching gun auction sites, mostly Gun Broker.
There are some good examples out there but the prices are all over the place.
I have no idea what I should pay.
So I am asking, whats a fair price range for one not so nice?
Price in good condition?
And price in excellent condition?
I realize you can not put a price on something you have not seen. I am looking for what you would consider a fair market price for the various conditions.
For example I am looking at one now I would consider in very good, not excellent shape for a buy it now of $1,700.
I just don't know what a fair number would be.
Please advise,
Thank you for your time,
Varooom
PS: Only a 29-2, blued, 6.5 inch will do. Already have Blackhawks, Redhawks and I even have a newer 629.
Only Dirty Harrys revolver will do.

Op;
Welcome to the forum from Virginia.
You may wish to drop to a 6" instead of 6-1/2" and maybe save a pile of money. The 6-1/2" seem to be quite a bit scarcer than the 6". Around here the 6" in excellent condition, slight turn line but otherwise 95-98% are in the $900 - $1,100 range, maybe more if wooden case, docs, etc.
A buy-it-now of $1700 that you are contemplating is really pushing $2k when fees, transfer, premium and shipping and insurance are all added in.
I sure others who are more knowledgeable than I will be along and maybe chime in with value estimates, but I sometimes wonder if all the Dirty Harry hype is even true about the 6-1/2". I know the movie gun site is seemingly an accurate source but I also heard that the original movie production company had a hard time coming up with what they really wanted for the Inspector Callahan character to carry and they had to "settle" for what they could get.
All I know for real is that once you get one, especially with target stocks, touching off more than 2 cylinders off full house ammo tends to get real hard on the hand, real quick, so my range bag always has some 44 Special cowboy loads for "fun" range time. The full house loads are reserved for impressing the local range buddies with fantastic plastic who sometimes flinch, even three lanes away when that 29-2 "speaks"

Ever since Colts went through the roof, Smiths have been gaining traction as far as increased prices.
I won't pay the top prices being asked, maybe I will never own some of these guns, but then again my patience has rewarded me with some very fine guns at better than good prices.

And sometimes they just end up in your lap.

I picked up a 29-2 4" for $700 last January. There are still some bargains out there , patience is required.

$700 is a great price. $1,700 is not so good. $1,700 might be OK for one that's 100% NIB with presentation case and everything. You should be able to find something in good condition but won't feel bad about shooting in the $1,000 range if you don't mind waiting.
Like cmansguns mentions in post #2 the 6" model might be easier to find and slightly cheaper, but it sounds like you're set on the 6.5" which is understandable to me. I was able to find one in good condition for $775 a couple of years back and that was a good price even 4 or so years ago.

I bought one from a forum member for around 1650 shipped. It was on the high end, but it was high condition from a reputable source. If you are willing to wait you can get a good one cheaper, but it might be awhile. Good luck to you.
