The butt serial of 8Jxxx makes it a “floating J” serial from 1971/72; a different number on the side of the grip frame would be an assembly number.
The other gun is too recent for me, so I can’t speak to the trade value.

Year 1971-1972. I have both, the Model 36 is not that hard to find. I would make the trade. The 617 is worth a little more. Condition of both should be considered

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.
While the standard shipping dates for the floating J serial numbers are known to be '71/'72, yours is early enough that it might have left the factory in late '70. I show a couple 8JXXX Chiefs Specials that shipped in December '70.
I'm infatuated by Chiefs, and I don't care for nose-heavy small calibers with a full lug so I bring that certain prejudice to the discussion.
My two bits.

.22 revolvers are a lot of fun but so expensive. I have a Ruger SP101 in .22 and enjoy it a lot. I got it for like $620 new. New GP100’s in .22 are even more. S&W .22’s are over $700. If you don’t shoot the j frame the cost of the 617 is worth the trade.

It's probably a good trade assuming both are in similar condition.
I figure it comes down to what you want to do with the gun.
The 36 is a good carry gun concealed easily in a pocket.
The 617 is a great range, plinking, and small varmint gun.
But carrying a 617 would be painful.
