I've wanted one of theses 41 mags for a long time. I found this one locally. Went to look and bought it. It's got the 8 3/8 barrel,
should be a great shooter. It came with the rubber grips. I'll see
if I like better with wood. I've owned a 41 redhawk since the mid
80s, IMHO the 41mag is very overlooked.

HDHIC,
You're gonna enjoy that revolver! I got hooked on the .41 mag back in 1971 and have been enjoying the caliber/cartridge ever since.
My 1st was a Ruger Blackhawk and it's still my favorite. But the stable also has a couple of S&W's, a Taurus, and a Marlin 1894.
Yes Sir - there's a lot to like about a .41 mag!

I just got my first 41 mag. It's a 657-5 7.5" unfluted cylinder. I'm definitely going to be looking for a 8 3/8s

Very nice, I have been looking for a Model 57 for some time. Probably a 6".
I have a Freedom Arms Model 83 with a 7-1/2" barrel, that is my favorite range gun. The 41 caliber should be more popular than it is.

Congratulations on your M57. The facination with the 41 magnum got me hooked about a year ago. Actually, I have wanted my buddy's 4" 57 ever since he bought it about 6 years ago at a gun show.
Since then I have been fortunate enough to find a 58, bought here on the forum, and a 6" 57 a few weeks ago from a pawn shop. Enjoy that fine new Smith.

Never wanted to own a .41 Mag. The .44 Magnum exceeds it in power and is more versatile being able to fire the .44 Special; the .357 Mag is effective, yet comfortable to shoot, especially using .38 Specials; plus the fact that loaded rounds and brass are not as plentiful as the other two mentioned. It's always been a non-starter for me. If someone gave me one to fill out that void in my collection, I'd accept it, but I'm spending no money on one.

You have to be a reloader to get full use of a 41 mag.

About 5 years ago found a 57 advertised as “unfixed, new, old stock” 8 3/8 in original box. When I opened the package I almost exploded. The flocking had turned into a tarry substance and all moving parts frozen in place. You couldn’t see the finish.Wanting a 57 so badly I calmed down and 2 cans of brake cleaner later the most gorgeous bluing was seen.I did see I had been screwed because the original grips had been removed leaving poor substitutes. The action is unbelievable.I mounted electronic sights and it is unbelievably accurate. One of my favorites and since bought an early pristine 4”.

I'm not really a fan of the 41 magnum cartridge, but when I found this 4", Model 57 (no dash), I couldn't resist it. It's about the prettiest S&W I've ever seen. It wouldn't have mattered a bit to me if it had been a 44 or a 357. I just liked the gun.

I bought a hundred pieces of Starline brass and some Berry's plated TC bullets, and have loaded up some bottom of the scale rounds, and have fired it a few times. It's a VERY nice gun, that is a pleasure to shoot.

Here is my 57 with some wooden grips and I do reload. The last 44 mag I had I traded for a 3 legged coon dog that was blind in one eye.

The entire N family is fabulous. This is my 1980 model 57 NOS, never fired since it left the factory. I have all the paperwork and boxes for it too and keep saying I'll shoot it as I already have hand loaded quite a few cartridges for it.

Hey Dieseltech, just curious, I just traded this unfluted 657 7.5" at the Kittery Trading post, they sold it on GB, and I'm wondering if you ended up with it? I did keep the rosewood Hogues and put the original grip back on.

Very nice 57 sir. Hopefully you can stop at just one. I was not able to. I started with the 6", then the 4", and 8 3/8". Then I went to the SS cousins. Is there no end????

I LOVE my 41's and I'm NOT a reloader. To me reloading is like a chore I don't wanna do. I just pay LAX $100 for a can of 250rds of their new factory loads and buy in bulk when they have free shipping specials...I love shooting my 41 Mags (4" and 6" 57's and 58's). Earl

Congrats on the 57. I have enjoyed the 41 mag for many years, have a soft spot for guns I can hunt with. Have found a good load is accurate in all my 41's while my 44's tend to be load specific per gun. Anyway, have many and continue to look for them as I browse the blued steel, in fact not real sure how many I have.

Earl;
Reloading is a completely intriguing hobby, that completely posses you, as any good hobby will do. when tried. It's the "only" way, that one can determine the full potential, of any given cartridge. When one follows this great hobby, it becomes almost as enjoyable as shooting the cartridges. It can only be understood by trying it. Being satisfied without trying reloading, is akin to being satisfied with corn bread, never having tried an apple fritter. My 2¢ on the matter is,"Try It, You'l Like It".

My guess is, that you will soon become a fan, especially if you reload for it, and shoot it a lot. I have firearms in both calibers, and can give a true comparison of them. It's my opinion, that the .41 Mag. will do anything that the Great, and better known, .44 Mag, will do, and do it better. My .44 Mags. lay severely neglected, in favor of my .41 Mag. firearms. My opinion, is based on a great number of rounds fired, while keeping an open mind, on the matter. I would be greatly interested in your opinion of the .41 Mag, and your compareson of the two calibers, after you have shot, a considerable number of rounds of each in comparison.

As no one is going to give you one, why even bother to post anything in this thread and bring nothing to the discussion. Is it your standard M.O. to be a Debbie Downer?

There are many of us whom DO like the .41 just fine. I have several .44 Magnums too, but I prefer the .41. Just like some of the others in this thread.

And let’s face it, most people download their .44 Magnums to .44 Special specs in either a .44 Magnum case or in a .44 Special case, but the end result is the same. XXXfps coming out the same end of the same barrel.

And that is what they shoot more than anything, judging from all the threads I’ve read on this fine forum.

We .41 Magnum fans can do the exact same thing. And a fully-loaded .41 Magnum handles most everything in North America, or what 98% probably of any of us will ever encounter in life.

Oh I have reloaded several times thru my life. At one point it was the only way I could afford to shoot but thankfully that time passed. What never did pass was the same feeling I get when I mow the damn yard . I’d rather buy in bulk and be done with it.

Sorry you think I'm a "Debbie Downer." I actually think the .41 Magnum Model 57 is a very nice and practical revolver. I was just expressing my opinion that for me, it's an answer to a question that doesn't exist. Having both a .44 Mag and a .41 Mag does not fulfill any discernible need (for me).

If you like the .41, then I can appreciate your praise; go for it. Fine cartridge, great gun, but it cannot do anything the .44 can't do just as well, and probably a mite better. JMHO.

My sincere apologies if I have offended you by my personal perception of the breed and my personal reasons for not having a .41. I believe that articulating that perception here in an open forum does indeed bring something of value to the discussion and represents a rational and considered point of view rather than negative intent.

I had my 4" Model 57 for 10 years before I fired a factory round. It is a reloader's dream. As noted, only drawback is the relative scarcity of brass and bullets.

Congrats! Only two so far but I'm always looking for another one.

One comment to watch for. Corrosion under the rubber grips. I would pull them off and lube the frame etc. Beyond that, looks like a beauty!

The 2 in the attached picture I got a couple days ago. Both P&R 1980. Both NIB. The 4" has a presentation case

I have had my M58 for almost 40 years, and carried it as my first service weapon. I think the cartridge has way too much going for it to be so limited in popularity.

However, I will admit that there is ONE advantage to the .44 for me - factory shotshells. I live in an area that has buzztails in most of the best hiking locations, and while they can generally be avoided and I wish them no ill as long as they out away from residential areas, if I were to go hiking, my 629-4 would almost certainly be the choice to carry. (I have 3 4" N frame, and the first choice holster for all of them is my Kramer MSP paddle. Second would be my Safariland 070 duty holster on a duty belt.)
