Default I wish we could start a database of what different varients weigh....

Sorry I spelled "variant" wrong.

There are so many barrel lengths and stocks and such. Barrel profiles.

I suppose I should start with mine. But I gotta get my scale out.

If people would like to contribute, please give us the change number "-2, etc", barrel length and profile, finish, and stocks. Obviously certain models are only stainless, but you never know. Someone might paint over it or something odd. Pics of gun on the scale are welcomed. I can update the original post with weights, so it's all on one page. I guess caliber should be mentioned if it needs distinction. But I think the model number usually covers that.....

Here we go:

That's not really my experience.... You can usually find general weights of a model. But there are so many variants between models. Plus you could even have the database include different stocks on them. An identical gun with different stocks might have a bit of a weight difference. I'll start......

I think you should weigh them without stocks on them if you want the numbers to be meaningful. Because stocks vary so wildly in choice or even wood density for the same model stock, it would skew numbers.

If this thread is still going when I get back from work at the rig I will weigh my Smiths without the stocks and post the numbers up. I have an analog Ohaus triple beam balance that was given to me that will be ideal for weighing them.

All true... a 6 1/2" gun will weigh more than a 6" gun of the same model.. 22 would be more because of barrel and cylinder mass.

Magnas weigh less than Target Grips for same models as well.

Sorry but I'm more interested , did my 1/4 pounder really weigh a 1/4 pound.

To give people an idea of what to look for when shopping around. Seems like a lot of people like to know, mainly if it's going to be a gun they carry.

I'm not sure why there is such an opposition to this with some of you guys. I mean people rave about their titanium / scandium frame revolvers and how much they like carrying them. And/ or their airweight. And a few ounces seem to matter a lot to some people.

It's not necessarily about how heavy they feel when shooting. Although if someone was interested in that, more power to them. Recoil is affected by weight. Balance is affected by weight and distribution of it.

And to be transparent even further, doing this is just another thing to keep my mind off of things.

But seriously, I would think the more info the better. There is a lot of really good info on this site, and I thought adding data would be a good thing. Some people may appreciate it. I'm not sure why there is questions about adding a source of extra info about these fine revolvers.

OK, I got some numbers for you, for what it's worth. I weighed them with the stocks they are wearing at present, since that seems to be what you want and I didn't feel like removing them to weigh them. Here you are:

1. 27-3 5" 50th Anniversary with factory targets - 1272 grams, 44.9 ounces
2. 27-2 5" nickel with Cocobolo Culina Target stocks - 1289 grams, 45.5 ounces
3. 629-3 Classic 6 1/2" with Olive Culina round to square conversion targets - 1420 grams, 50.1 ounces
4. 27-2 3 1/2" nickel with factory targets - 1242 grams, 43.8 ounces
5. 27-2 4" nickel with Kingwood Culina Targets - 1250 grams, 44.1 ounces
6. 27-2 6" nickel with factory targets - 1313 grams, 46.3 ounces
7. 27-2 8 3/8" nickel with factory targets - 1383 grams, 48.8 ounces
8. 27-5 6 1/2" "Outnumbered" with English Walnut Culina Targets - 1298 grams, 45.8 ounces
9. 627-5 Pro 4" with Ahrends Retro round to square conversion Combats - 1178 grams, 41.6 ounces
10. 29-6 Classic 5" with stock rubbers - 1288 grams, 45.4 ounces
11. 60-15 3" with stock rubbers - 655 grams, 23.1 ounces

All these were weighed on an Ohaus 2610 triple beam balance I have.

I hope this info helps you out.

"Sorry I spelled "variant" wrong. "

Just a little tip - if you go to edit and click on advanced options, you can change/modify your title if it bothers you.

The bar has been raised higher on the statistics wall of non-information. Will we be seeing a table of "averages" and "Standard Deviation" ? Time at the range will now resume.

But how are you going to calculate the weight variance between loaded and unloaded??.

Does the revolver hold 5 or 6 rounds?. What about the newer 8 round round or a 10 round 22lr,

Then of course one must calculate the weight of the projectiles. Large weight difference between a 125 and 158 grain bullet in a 38 special or 357 mag times 5 or times 6.
Powder charge weight??

Altitude and humidity when samples are weight? Is there a control "unit" Sample size?

Have the scales been calibrated with check weights??

What about polymer guns?

Default Suggestion!

I would like to make a few suggestions about your data base! These suggestions are from my data bases that I maintain!
I use the program "Excel" which is a data base type system and once you get comfortable with it, it is easy to add, subtract, and change information! You will maintain this on your computer and it can be sent in an email as a file attachment to anyone that wants a copy! This will reduce the band width requirements from the forum, because it could get very large, and prevent the digs from those who see no value in your data base! It is obvious there are those that SEE the value in your data base because of the response you have received! If you maintain the data base on the open forum it will soon be off the front page and interest will die! Also you will be able to maintain the anonymity of your contributors via email!

Interesting topic.I remember having a 27-2 with a six inch barrel and a patridge sight weigh an ounce less then an early 4 screw Highway Patrolman with the same length barrel. Both guns were weighed absent of stocks. This always puzzled me.

With how ubiquitous a model 10 is, I'm surprised I'm not getting more weights for them.
