Default Help identify Model 36

Hi guys, new to the forum here. I just purchased my first S&W revolver and was hoping to get some information on it. Its a Model 36, 3" barrel with a square butt. SN 2927XX. I found this tucked away on the side of the cabinet at the gun store and knew I had to have it. Any info would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.

Congrats on that find. Looks like a beauty.

I'd put its shipping date about June of '63.

S&W went from that flat latch cylinder release to a regular latch in '65 and stopped putting the diamond around the screw escutcheon on the grips in '67.

Here's my 2" round butt that shipped in July '67. Yours appears to be in much better condition.

Thank you. And thanks for the info. Any idea on estimated value? I gave 400 for it, which I was prepared to pay for a new J frame. I feel like I got a fair price for this gun. But I'm not an avid collector (yet) and am unsure what these vintage pieces bring are worth. Thanks again.

I think you got an excellent price on a very nice small .38. I think they're not only great for defense; they make a better small trail gun than the M-34 Kit Gun .22.

A lot of dealers would have asked $600 for a gun like that, in that condition. Maybe you deserved something nice!

Thanks for your service, Marine!

Welcome from Pennsylvania!
You picked up a really nice piece for what sounds like a real bargain price.

Welcome to the forum. You bought a splendid little revolver for a very good price. Three-inch J-frames are much sought after.

Thanks guys. I'm tickled to death. Been trying to get into a Smith revolver for a while now. Glad I got in with a nice vintage piece.

very nice J.... would like to have one just like it'

Welcome to the Forum...… now run away. This stuff is addictive. I had a 19-4 snub that I got in a trade years ago, found this forum and.... well....lets say 7 - 10 guns bought and sold with 3 mdl 19's, 1 mdl 66 a 642 a 640 and a pre-war M&P in my safe. All because I just had to know about my 19-4...….

Oh and be aware.... the gun leather addiction is inevitable.

Great group here...….. you have been warned

You have a fine gun... a fine shooter. The M36 with 3" barrel came in several variations. The square butt & 3" gives it slightly better practical accuracy. I believe the NYPD issued 3" M36s to their female officers at one time.
The longer barrel is no impediment to concealment in a good holster since the barrel hangs vertically. Mine is a Round butt & now wears factory targets.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your service as well!

You got a classic at a better price than classic price.

It's the slender barrel version with the scarcer sq butt., diamond Magna stocks, and flat latch.

I agree with two-bit cowboy above. Likely shipped mid-1963.
