Box? Papers?

Looked very nice, except grips. Probably $600-$700

I think that is about double what I would want to pay for a model 36

But then I already have a robust collection

Tell us what the reason is that you are considering that particular revolver

Are you looking for a shooter? Or a safe queen?

Do you specifically want a no dash 36? Or perhaps a square butt model?

Do you need it to fill a missing spot in a Model 36 collection?

No box or papers. Well to be honest, I had intended to get another firearm from them & placed it on layaway. Then changed my mind & since I always wanted a 36 pre-lock, asked them if I could switch & they were nice enough to do it (“once”). I’ll shoot it at least once, don’t know if it’ll be a carry piece? Might be too nice for that. What year was it made? Does anyone have a nice set of grips???

So you already bought it

That revolver is a 1971/72 revolver. Floating Js are harder to be close on with manufacture dates

A call to the factory might yield a shipping date for you

That's a very nice looking Model 36! I'm assuming that you are well pleased with it. If so, it's worth what you paid for it. I would say that there are not many in that condition from that time period available for sale. The price is a bit high in my estimation for a simply nice copy of the same gun, but yours seems beyond pretty nice as far as I can tell.
Yes, I would shoot it myself, because doing so won't likely diminish it's value if it's well and carefully handled and cleaned and maintained by you. Your decision, of course, whether or not you shoot it. For me, shooting is a lot more fun than digging it out of the safe on occasion just to look at and try not to leave fingerprints on that beautiful blue! We never know, but the prices for very nice and desirable older S&W revolvers is steadily creeping upward, with some models actually kind of leaping upward. If you are happy, so am I! Shoot, I'm even happy if you are having second thoughts about it pricewise. If you keep it long, it's not likely to lose much if any money. It is a used firearm, so it's already taken the first hit on value. I always ask myself how many dollars worth of pleasure I get from any such revolver that I buy. I almost always buy only guns that I personally have a big "like" for, and seeing and holding and shooting them makes me forget soon what I paid for them!!!

Congratulations on finding such a nice revolver!

Very nice...... but seems high even for a very nice 36. Maybe $500 max around here.....generally less for a 2" square butt.....

now a 3' square butt..... add a few $$$$s

Thank you. I’ll pay it off next week but unfortunately won’t be able to pick it up for awhile. 2 handguns ahead of it. I’m in sorry-*** NJ w/ their stupid OGAM (one gun a month) limit.

I snagged this M36 from an Elderly Neighbor who was going into Assisted Living and he Could not have it there. Gave $400 for it. The old Gent says that he never fired it. It was born in 1981 same Year as my Son. He was here for a visit a couple of weeks ago and I Gave it to Him. Still got to ship it to his FFL.

Well, without the box and dox, and correct grips, I would not go over 500.00. But, this is how we all learn. I have a 17-3 that I paid too much for. Not a ton of money, but some. Now i know where the market is. if you are happy, that is what counts. Now, the lesson here is that if you want another gun, before you go looking, ask the question here first

This gun w/ arrive @ my LGS today or tomorrow. How can I tell for certain whether or not it has been refinished or is original as claimed? I have a three day inspection period & if there are any doubts, I will send it back. I cannot even take possession of it to possibly bring it to someone for them to look @ because I do not want to waste a permit on it & then send it back & have to wait another (30) days before getting another handgun I have waiting. This has to do w/ NJ’s asinine one gun a month stipulation. Thank you. As always, I greatly appreciate your assistance & invaluable advice.

You need to live in Georgia. That is "way" high for around here. You do see them out at gun shows for that price, but nobody buys them and the dealers don't have a lot brain power going for them in many cases. I own maybe a dozen and manage to stay in them for around $200 to $300 each. A very common gun. Not all are 99% but many are. I would expect to see a LNIB example with all the docs out for around $500. I wouldn't pay that because I already have several LNIB examples. At $400 I would be tempted to dicker a little and maybe bring it home.

That is a nice gun, and I don't think it has been refinished.

Don't worry about the price - you paid, and it is yours now. Enjoy a fine revolver.

Update: Gun’s barrel had been reblued. Clearly different color than the rest. Even I could see that & confirmed by gunsmith. Plus a crack in the crane. Soooo, w/ be sending it back to Legacy & they’ll reimburse me. They were nice about it, being that they “misrepresented” it. Mistakes are made, even by the big auction houses, however, whomever inspects their guns prior to listing, may want to clean his glasses??? Lol. Actually I’m relieved, having not paid top dollar after all. Now I can seek one more reasonably priced.

Would you mind posting a photo of the crack?

I notice the the cyl release thumb piece has a serious rub on the frame as well.

Can you describe more specifically where the crack is?

I noticed the frame was black and didn't match the barrel.

At 1st glance my first impression was that it was a miss-marked model Mod 37 Airweight.

I know it wasn't marked Airweight on the barrel, and the cyl and yoke should match the barrel blue steel color.

Then I thought the frame and cyl looked like it might be ceracoated.

I just haven't heard of cracked Mod 36 frames.

I’ll call the gun shop later in the morning as soon as they open & ask if they shipped it back yet? If not, & it’s not all packed up, i’ll see if I can drop by & take pics.

Consider it a blessing in disguise. You can definitely do better will a little patience.

About 2 years ago, I picked up this square butt, 36 no dash from my LGS for $400.

That's lucky it was busted. That was about double the value. With shipping and FFL fees, ouch!
