Default Anybody else have a double stamped model number?

I was just finally cleaning a Model 57-0 that I got a few months ago. Upon inspection of the model number stamped in the crane area, I could see that there was another number lightly stamped underneath. With a magnifying glass I am able to see a "29-2" underneath the 57-0. I thought it was odd that there would be a "-0" after the 57 but it appears to have been used to cover up the -2.
I called S&W and the rep stated by serial number it was listed as a Model 57 and they would not have done this. All three of the serial numbers stamped match. Did they run out of pre-stamped model 57"s??
Any one else out there have and/or seen this before?

Dont fret on it. Happened when the factory ran out of stamped rec.
Had a few in the last years. Not rare. Just unusual. Still factory stamped and on the books as original.

I have seen several. Took a double take one day when I picked up a Mod 14, and it was clearly stamped Mod 16. I had to double check the chambers and bore. S&W used up slow moving frames on faster moving models.

Yep... Guns aren't like stamps or coins, where a "double strike" makes them worth more. Errors are just errors, sorry.

I've got a model 16-3 that used a 14 stamped frame. This is quite common with the 16-3's as it was at the end of their run. Mine was shipped in 1972 and if I remember right, the K-32 was dropped in 1974.

I have a flatlatch Model 34-no dash that was originally stamped as a Model 36. The “34” is overstamped.

I have a 57-0 as well and can also see 29-2 underneath the 57 stamp. It is a nickel, 4 inch model.

^^This^^. As Moosedog also mentioned, overstamping a Model 14-3 to make a 16-3 seems to have been a very common event... at the end there just wasn’t sufficient demand to keep Model 16 frames in large supply. I’m just surprised that there was a Model 16 frame kicking around the factory to build the example H Richard encountered.
