Default Model 28-2 Contrasting Finish and Grips

Hi, All -

I purchased a rather pitted and rusted 28-2 several months ago. It was an accurate shooter, so the condition didn't deter my purchase, as I was going to have it refinished anyway. The refinish job came out quite nicely.

The HP came with magna grips which were a bit too small for my hand. Knowing that I wanted larger grips, I thought I'd go with a bright color that contrasted with new blue finish.

So, I decided on the highest contrast - simulated white ivory.

I personally have a bit of an affinity for white grips, although I know this would not be everyone's cup o' tea. I'm pleased with the grips, and folks who see this rig for the first time are quite pleasantly taken aback by the color contrast.

This is strictly a range target shooter - no carry and no holster.

I'd like to share the pics:

Thanks, Peak.

The refinish job was done by my local smith here in Slidell, LA.

The grips came from Boone Trading Company, and were advertised as "Oversized" which is another reason I chose them. They fit my particular hand quite well.

Thanks, Mike -

IMHO, it turned out great. There is always the great debate of to refinish or not refinish. As the old saying goes "circumstances alter cases" I always say your gun, your money! You made a excellent choice. hardcase60

From what I can see in the picture, your local smith did a TERRIFIC job on the refinish. I'm also a fan of faux ivory grips and your's look fantastic on the model 28.

In my opinion, that blue job looks better than the S&W factory blue they use nowadays. That's a very nice looking model 28. If I decide to get one of my model 27's refinished, you might get a PM from me about who this gunsmith is. Slidell isn't that far for me to drive to.

Thank you Bayou52. I have a 3 1/2" 27-2 I bought 4 years or so ago that was originally a blue gun that someone had gotten nickel plated and the nickel is peeling at the barrel end a bit. It's also spitting lead a bit and needs some smith work on it so I will probably send to S&W for a tuneup and then off to your guy for a stripping and reblue. Unless this guy is also a good revolversmith too.

I'm usually not a fan of refinishing but that looks extremely well done.

Just curious, did it come with the trigger shoe or did you add it yourself?

Hi, JF -

This 28-2 had pitting on each side of the muzzle, on the cylinder and other spots along with rust spots. If it had not been abused, it was certainly severely neglected in its past life.

I recently added the trigger shoe. It's an Ace # 1. Since this is a target/range gun only, for me, the shoe guides my finger to the same spot each time.

The smith said he installed Wolfe springs. The trigger breaks crisply @ 2.5 pounds with zero creep. Just a pleasure to shoot, really...

Thanks, Bayou52

I think that it came out quite well! I have a 1960 no dash. Pictured here with Herrett Stocks. They are comfy to me. I have diamond magnas & targets for it also. Bob

Beautiful Revolver.
(lose the trigger shoe and install a factory wide trigger)
