Default Model 28 6.0 in

I picked up this 1967 Highway Patrolman up last week (my first been looking for what seemed like forever). Was on my way to range this morning - figure I better take a few photo shots before pulling the trigger.

I agree. Has this been refinished or has it never been used?

Nice gun. I have a 4" and 6". A model 27 without all the options. ENJOY!

The grips are probably not original but they are nice and who cares. No me, I change them anyway

I had to look because it seems everyone that has been buying them lately, and mine all are 4 inchers. So what a surprise I got when I see the picture of not only a 6 inches but also wearing diamond target grips. What a beauty!! Just like new as everybody has been saying, nice find. 67 would make them non original but are a very nice bonus cause they are certainly not cheap. Enjoy

Thanks for the info on the grips guys.. I am not that familiar with the 28 more specifically the correct grips for this year. The revolver is in excellent condition and was purchased for a very reasonable number. I have a couple of nice custom grips that might work out well with this gun. This is my first 28 and happy to have it. As mentioned, it was on the plan today for a range trip, but now I am buried catching up with pictures. Posting a triple lock shortly.

Mine came with the magnas, they look nice but I have big hands. Let me know if you think about getting rid of those grips. Also, if anyone knows where I can find some grips like these, let me know please.
Nice gun, here is the one I found a few months ago.

The grips may not have been on the gun when it left the factory, hard to say without a letter, but they are correct for the time frame and could have been ordered with them. If it were mine, those grips would stay on it!!

I believe all 28's came with magnas. Remember this the down scaled version a 27, but every bit as good IMO. My first revolver ever was a 28-2 in 1969.. $ 103.00 new

I think it's very possible that this gun could have came with the target grips as original equipment. I have an S series 28-2 that did.

Mine came with grips just like yours. It is stamped as a Washington State Patrol duty gun.

Very Nice! As to grip originality, the 3rd edition of SCSW page 196 says of the Model 28 "Magna or target walnut grips with S&W medallions and diamond insert", and "1968: Delete diamond grip" so if your SN dates shipping to 1967 you certainly have the right era grips. I'm sure some that shipped after then were still equipped with diamond stocks until supplies dried up. I have two S prefix 28-2s from around that time and both came to me with diamond target grips. Don't let them go missing as they are fairly desirable.
I'm glad your patience paid off with a beautiful specimen. Well done!

This one came with Target Grips from the factory. I have the box which is deep enough to close with the Targets and is marked on the label, grips-T.

The grips look exactly like mine. My Dad used his Pre-28 (now mine) as his service revolver when he worked for the police department. I also don't think they came with the HP as he had a smaller set with S&W engraved in them. The bigger grips feel so much nicer.
