Default What to Sell Dilemna?

Have a rough one to make. I have recently got an excellent 28-2 4” in excellent condition. I shot it and it’s accurate. But the L Frame always felt better. I just happened on. 681 no dash 4”. Feels great. Points much better. I also own an excellent condition Ruger Service Six 4”. Really like that gun. K frame weight and feel bit robust.

I have to sell either the 28-2 or Ruger if I keep the 681. I have other guns to sell but I don’t want to sell 2 k frames to equal one other gun. I have sentimental reasons for keeping those k frames.

So a pinned and recessed 28-2 or a Ruger Service Six? Keeping all would be an option but not responsible. Truth be told, the 681 felt better in the hand than the 28-2 but it’s he pinned and recessed on the 28-2 that is shying me away from selling that one. But the Ruger is in mint condition and no longer available either.

I’m not eating birdseed. Do better then many but I’ve spent more than usual this year on guns. Trying to do the right thing here. I almost never shoot .357. Usually .38. So the itch can be scratched by 2 instead of 3.

You aren’t really talking about a lot of money here, so put it on plastic or borrow a few bucks from a friend. You may regret selling as witnessed by many here. I know I have...

I'm sorry, I do not understand the question referencing the potential "sell" of a handgun.

Take a deep breath, a step back and truly assess the situation. You will make more money but, you cannot make another Mod. 28, 681 or Service Six that you personally selected, nurtured and protected.

If you feel you must, because this is, after all, the Smith & Wesson Forum, sell the Ruger.

Just my humble opinion.

I know. In the grand scheme of things it nothing. But a promise is a promise. I’ve gone a bit off the rails this year with purchases. But carry plastic guns don’t bring the same money.

So IF I sell, pinned and recessed 28-2 or Ruger Service Six? Both no longer made. The adjustable sights don’t mean much to me.

I stand to be corrected but I don't think Ruger supports the Service Six anymore. S&W supports the 28. I may well be wrong.

You sell a model 28 to keep a Ruger...Dude you're on the wrong forum...I'm just kidding!

I would not sell a blue gun to keep a steel gun but thats just my taste.

If you need to move the 4'' model 28 quick, shoot me a text.

My preference of the three is the 28-2 so I’d dump one of the others.

I’d keep the one of the remaining two that I shot the least.

THEY don’t. But the amount I shoot it and the nice condition of it I doubt I’ll
Wear it out.

There’s no problem here, sell me the Ruger!

No, really, that’s a tough call, but for me I wouldn’t get rid of any of them.

But if it’s between a 28-2 and a Ruger Security Six, in my area/world the 28-2 is much easier to replace, as I have found very few of the Ruger SS series available (and buy almost everyone I have found, unless in rough/bad shape), so to me it would make more sense to sell the 28-2.

Glad I don’t have to make THAT decision, but I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide.

I doubt you’d be able to, IMHO they are the BEST double action revolver Ruger has ever made!

My first revolver was a 1968 28-2( I was too young, but Dad bought it for me, I paid ). Traded it. The decades went on, and I wanted a 28. Recently I bought a 4" and 6" 28. They are near the last things I would let go. Poor man's 27, but a great gun. Keep that is my .02

I bet if you go to the Ruger forum they will tell you to sell the 28-2. Unfortunately, over here you will probably get more folks telling you to sell the Ruger.

Personally since I have never sold a gun, I would try to keep them all but I'm one of those gun nuts that the anti's always talk about.

I find them all very cool so have difficulty letting any of them go.

Personally, the 28 would be the keeper of the trio for me, but I'm not you.
You already stated how much you like the Ruger, how much you like the L frame, how little adjustable sights mean to you,so you've answered your own question.
You keep what you like best. You don't keep a gun based on the fact that it's P+R.

I sold my nickel 19 years ago and have regretted it ever since. That said I am not a collector, so somthing that doesn’t get used kinda bothers me. I see it as cash sitting there.

I have nothing against Ruger, but I prefer the fit and finish of Smith, not to mention the superior DA trigger.

I agree with those that say keep em all, but if I had to, the Ruger would be gone.

Now on the other hand, if I haven’t already bought too many this year, I would say send the Patrolman to me.
I will love and cherish it.

I always hesitate to encourage people to sell a gun. Usually they regret it. That said, you seem to like the 681 and it’s probably a less common, more valuable, and more desirable revolver than the Ruger. If you just have to sell something, I’d hang on to the 681. I’d only sell the HP if someone (not a friend) offered a BIG bundle of money.

Do you have a very close friend or family member you could sell it to, with the understanding that you could buy it back if the opportunity presents itself?

If you don't have an immediate need for the money why sell. They will hold their value and can be sold when needed. In the meantime shoot your interest out of them..

A promise. I admire your intent to stand by your word. My guess is that there's an unhappy wife involved in that promise. More than once, I've seen firearms become a point of contention in a marriage. But I'm just guessing here. How about working out a win-win? Maybe you agree to compensate for this year's "off the rails" activities by not buying anything next year. Or you find a way to address the other person's feelings of being short-changed.

Now take my comments with a grain of salt. I'm no expert; not even close! (I'm divorced!) Clearly I didn't figure it out, but I also don't have to justify my firearms purchases to anybody!

Good luck!

Sell the Ruger. Keep your promise. Life goes on.

PS - I’m happy to see I’m not the only one to spell dilemna that way.

Do what you have to do. Personally, I fall in the dont sell any camp, but have no idea what your situation is.
If it came down to it and there was no way to avoid liquidation of one, the Ruger would be on the block without a doubt. I am not a fan of N frame 357’s but care even less for Ruger DA/SA revolvers.

Didn’t notice that! Fat fingers on an iPhone keyboard! Auto-correct my ***!

The wife isn’t hassling me at all. I usually sell a gun to buy one. I’ve bought 6 guns in like like 8 months and sold only one. One was considered a birthday present to myself, a K38 Combat Masterpiece. Another is going on the block this weekend. It should just cover the most recent acquisition, an M&P Compact 2.0. Couldn’t resist the rebate. I never promised her anything. I promised myself enough was enough for a while. I’d get more for the 28 than anything else I am willing to sell right now so that would make me about even. I don’t even have the 681 in hand yet. I will tomorrow. But I have held other L frames and owned a few as well. They point naturally for me and feel like just the right weight and balance.

As for the 28-2, they sell on gunbroker but not for huge money. 686’s go for more for some reason.

I know. The 681 feels better to me. The shop I bought the 28-2 in had a 686 in the case when I went to pick up the 28. It was listed at $525, $100 more than I paid for the 28. I know the 28 was a great deal and apparently the shop owner realized he had priced it too low. When I was picking it up another customer saw it and commented on it and the great price. I stepped outside to make a call when they ran the check and the owner told me if I was interested in selling it back to let him know. He’s never done that before. I bet the other customer told he would have paid more than I did for it. Even if I sell it back to him he’s gotta make a profit so he’s not gonna give me much more than I paid for it. He’d probably tell me he’d do me a favor and give me what I paid out the door for it ($440). I could get more in a private sale.

It all comes down to this: I like the 28-2. I like the near flawless blued finish. I know it’s a “poor mans 27” but it looks barely used. Two tiny marks on the side plate and barrel, like it was bumped or something. I like the P&R barrel and chambers. I’ve had several of those over the years but this is my only remaining one and they’re not going down in value. I know I’ll barely shoot it. K frames and L frames feel better to me. I rarely shoot .357 anyway and the 681 and Six can scratch that itch. But the 681 feels better in the hand to me. Less “ clunky “. I’ll have the 681 tomorrow so I’ll make a decision.

By the way, I have several semi autos as well. A few 3rd gen’s, a Beretta Vertec, and the rest are plastic auto loaders that aren’t worth enough used to cover the cost of the 681. Which I paid $514 for, by the way. The 3rd gens and Vertec are off the table. Had them too long and shoot them too well. The M&P 2.0 Compact was probably a dumb buy, but $380 after rebate was a good deal and I don’t have any light weight high capacity carry guns. And I do shoot M&P’s very well.

Why sell any of them ( unless you're really hard up) ? What's a few hundred bucks over time. The sellers remorse you'll experience isn't worth it ( take it from someone who has experienced this too many times)

Tough decision. You got (depending on how long ago you paid $440) the 28 for a steal and in your posts you note how much you really like it but barely mention the Service Six, which functionally is the same gun as a 681. (Ok, the 681 is more like a GP100 but you get the point...)

However, you seem to have a problem with getting rid of your several "plastic auto loaders". With the choice of keeping a nice steel revolver, even against several of those, to me the choice would be clear, especially if the semi-autos are current production and cheap. Those are likely easily replaceable. If you are not prone to regretting selling guns just get rid of the nice, out of production, hard to find in that condition steel revolvers that you like the least and hang onto the plastic.

Good luck in your decision.

Default JUST SPIT BALLING HERE.

I think you would shoot the 681, the 28 would become a safe queen, the Ruger used to test new/hot reloads before running them in a S&W. MY speed 6 snub is a field gun/load checker/SD. No answer for you. GUARENTEED you would deeply regret selling any of those 3, ANYTHING else you could sell?

Best to start a new thread or search existing ones. Totally dependent on your local ability to do face to face, your relationship with a gun store for transfers, and your tolerance for buying stuff sight unseen . . .

Wow! What deals you get!

Around here the the two Smiths you stole would be $800 or more.

I've done several through Armslist, beware of scammers. Gunbroker is easy to set up an account. LGS not even as a last resort.

Did your promise to yourself come with a timeframe.?
Get all the Smith's you have mentioned under your roof.
Shoot/handle pack for 6 months.

After that...make YOUR call.

I always remember the guns that I sold off for what I thought was an important reason at the time. Very few of those reasons have withstood the test of time. I paid about $29 for a Remington Nylon 66 in 1961. I foolishly sold it off three years ago for $560. Today it is worth at least twice that. It did however need some work and jammed pretty badly and I had a new CZ 452 Varmint barreled to punch out .22's with. Little did I know of the shortage of ammo that was coming...........I could not see spending .05 or .07 a round for .22 LR when I could make 9mm for .035 a round.

I doubt the Ruger is gonna go. K frame handling in a stronger .357 just makes too much sense. I know I’m gonna love the 681. I handled the 686 the shop had two days after buying the 28. It just felt so much better.

But I like the 28 too. If it wasnt pinned and recessed and destined to climb in value it wouldn’t even be a question. I’ll hold off on it for now. Give it a few weeks till the new gun syndrome wears off. Make my decision then. If they all stay, my gun buying days are on hold for a year. I really went on a tear this year.

You have 3 desirable revolvers, what is the problem? Sell the Lee press and buy a Dillon progressive.

Default selling......?????

Never sell guns.!!!! ........ My Donna would skin me if I sold anything. She refused a $17,500. profit sale past few months.......to compensate for even considering that sale, she put pressure on to get a Jap. T-11.........it is on its way........$10,000.

It is a dilemma. I personally would sell 2 autoloaders to keep the 28.... I think. Of course I don't really own one but me, I'm just not caring about autos lately. So...... Do you have any long guns you can sell?

The thing is, a 28 will go up in price. A lot of other guns won't. At least I think it will......

I wouldn't sell anything right away. The longer you sit on it the more it will be worth. If you sell it tomorrow it will be worth what you get for it and never any more.

I am a Smith & Wesson shooter/accumulator all the way. However, I am a revolver man. I'd sell all the bottom feeders before I sold a revolver. (Actually, that's what I did.)

If you are primarily a shooter, keep the two that you are most likely to use. If that means the Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman goes down the road, I think you have enough interest in this thread to ensure it finds a good home and you make a decent profit.

Just sayin'.

Now, if it was a Model 27...

IMO N frame Smiths are the ultimate revolver, so there's little chance I'd sell the 28.

Those older Rugers are classics that are becoming more unusual all the time.

Conversely, L frame revolvers are an awkward mutation of the K frame and I can't stand them.

So I know which one I would sell.

That said, I'd rather sell two plastic guns and selling two might make your Special Lady Friend even happier.

Well, I got the 681. Drove 75 miles each way to save on shipping and my FFL fees. Very nice. Looks barely used. I’ll post pics eventually but it’s a standard 681 no dash. Has Uncle Mikes rubber grips and the M stamp. Serial number ABD6545 if anybody has a born on date.

As for selling something, I’m sure I’m gonna. I have several K frames. I have an extremely nice Model 67 with a pinned barrel. Maybe I’ll sell that one. I have several other K frames and the 67 is kind of relegated to “wife hears a noise” gun. The 681 could easily replace that. She doesn’t carry so the extra weight won’t matter.

I thought about that. But plastic guns have so little resale value. When you can buy a new Shield for like $340, what could I hope to get for a used one?

My wife's gun, until her recent health issues, was my 1982 S&W Model 681 loaded with Remington 125 grain SJHP .38 Special +P ammo. Later, Winchester 130 grain JHP "Defend" standard pressure .38 Special ammo replaced the Remington ammo. It's wearing Crimson Trace laser grips. It would make an excellent choice for a house gun since recoil is almost non-existent.
