Default Project Model 36

I received this today. It was described as 0% finish, missing side plate screw and grips. While I was waiting for it I started to wonder if it was really nickel, not 0% finish. I tried Oxpho-Blue on the side plate and barrel, see pic, to see if it would work. There is pitting, but no flaking. I'm still thinking it's nickel, but I'm hoping it's not. I want to rust blue it. Any help on determining if it's nickel? Thanks, Al

I don't believe that there were any stainless guns being produced during the flat-latch era.

Good luck

If it changes color with Oxpho-blue, my guess is that it is not nickel. I also believe if it left the factory as a nickeled gun, there would be an "N" stamped in some location. Under the left grip, rear of the cylinder, on the barrel between it and the ejector rod, or under the ejector star.

See this thread for a discussion of nickel plated S&Ws.

N frame nickel marking, where is the N mark from the factory? S&W model 58

J-frames of that era didn't have an "N" to denote nickel. I have two nickel Chiefs, a '54 and a '56, and neither has the "N".

The way to know for sure which finish it had when it left the factory would be to have Roy letter it, but that still wouldn't let you know if it had been refinished at some later point.

ps: since you're a S&WCA member you might ask Roy the question in the member's section of the forum. You'll need to give him the serial number.

No matter how bad the gun was kept (internals and protected surfaces, etc.), some part of the gun would have a trace of the original finish. My guess would be it was blued but Roy should be able to tell you.

And not to be nosy, but in its current condition why do you prefer it was not a nickel gun? Looks as though you are starting from square one no matter what?

I just figure I'd have another issue getting any remaining plating off since it appears most of the parts are bare steel. But any parts that look like they are still nickel plated turn color with the cold blue. I guess I'll proceed like it isn't nickel.
