Default Model 10 S&W, used

I have kind of a question about used Mod. 10 from a French LE agency. I was bored and looked at a large firearm dealer's site we all have heard of and came across an ad selling used model 10s from a French LE agency, imported by PW Firearms, for $269, kind of beat up from age and holster wear, ugly, but were supposedly 100% usable. Some had original wooden grips, others had after market ones according to their ad. (There was no dash after the 10. Example mine is a 10-8.) Not a lot of other info, just .38 Specials that worked, imported from France. The only one pictured really needed cleaned up! I bought my 10-8 in 1998 used, for $225 - $250. It's dated around 1988 I believe, and is in very nice condition (not a safe queen, but nice) and shoots straight, paper plate killer at 25 yards no problem. Are the Model 10 revolvers actually worth $270 in sloppy yet functional condition? I don't want to get in any trouble but I saw it on Bud's Guns. Also, I have nothing but good to say about Bud's sales or service as I have used them quite a few times with never a problem. I like my 10-8, but maybe I can sell it if they're really worth some cash if I ever need it. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance. Jeff T., Pgh PA

I gotta be honest...
I've read your post three times and I really can't figure out what the question is. Suppose I'll just answer what seem like the questions you asked...

Are these French LE re-import guns worth about $300 by the time they are in your hands? Well... I'd say yes, assuming the timing is good and the barrel isn't bulged. However, I have handled and shot Model 10's with bulged barrels and they still shoot plated/jacketed very well despite the bulge.

The real value in a beat-up, ugly, finish-wrecked Model 10 that shoots well is that you can do ANYTHING with it and lose no sleep. You can let friends borrow it, you can Mexican carry it with no worries of scratches, you can place it anywhere no matter if it gets knocked around. There are literally millions of these and if yours is a beater that shoots well, it's a joy to have.

Maybe you can sell one in the future...?
Sure, possibly, but if that is part of your game plan, it's a lousy plan. You won't get value out of it, especially when professional dealers continue to offer LE turn-ins, you won't get much money for one. It's better off to be kept and used.

Sevens, What I was asking was if these guns I saw were selling for $260, would one like mine, in much better shape visually, be worth more money if I ever wanted to sell it. I don't want to buy one of the ones I saw then sell it. I just wondered if a nice one like mine be worth more? Or any Model 10 in general. I need to get a pic on here, I know. Sorry for the confusion. Jeff

In my experience...
No, not really, generally speaking. I say this because we are talking about perhaps THE single most common commercially produced handgun ever. And those dealers are in business and they reach a lot of interested buyers.

That's generally speaking. On an individual basis, certainly you could find someone that sees and wants your particular one for a little more money.

If yours were in mint condition, then sure. If it were mint or nearly mint AND had it's original box, then yes again.

If it's just another S&W Model 10 in average shape but fine working condition, then it's real value is as a shooter, to own and to love and to use a lot. But it is not the model to hope or expect to sell for $400 or more because that isn't likely.

Thank you. And, there were thousands made, making supply pretty much surpassing demand. Next to my K22, the .38 is my favorite shooter of all my handguns. I could never see it selling more than $300-350. It just surprised me to see the revolver pictured selling for $270; but then, I bought one of those 92S Berettas and it's an excellent shooter that is very worn externally. If I scratch it, so what?! (I think it was from an Italian PD storage warehouse.) So sorry for confusing you! After I re-read my post, and thinking about the popularity and dependability of the Mod. 10s, I believe I answered my own question, had I thought about it for twenty minutes! I bet almost everyone who owns more than three .38 specials has or had at least one S&W model 10 at one time or another.

If not, he or she certainly should have.

I have a couple of pre Model 10s, but have never owned a Model 10.

Default Model 10-9

I found this Model 10-9 at my local gun store back in June of last year. The original owner had carved up the foam insert inside the box, and there's a small rust spot on the sideplate, but other than that, it's in excellent condition. It came with Uncle Mike's Square Butt Conversion grips on it, and I don't thing the gun store owner was even aware it was a round butt model. I know I wasn't aware of that fact until after I got it home and removed the grips.

I paid $350 for it, and no, I wouldn't sell it for anything even close to that!
