Default Unfired new in box with all documents 19-4 nickel

I wasn't sure where to put this , so I am going to put it here. Moderators, please move it to another forum if you feel it needs to be elsewhere.

A local shop has a NIB 19-4 4" in nickel that he is selling. I am a shooter, not a collector,so it is beyond my interest. The owner is a friend and has had a hard time trying to move this piece as he doesn't feel the right people for the gun come through his shop.Mostly hunters and target shooters, but no collectors that he is aware of.

I told him I'd try to put this out here where you guys can take a look to see if anyone is interested.

SO here we go.

First the good
It's a 19-4, 4 inch barrel in nickel finish. has everything that would have come with it . Box,paperwork, tool kit and SAT.

Now the bad

It has a small flake of nickel missing on the front of the cylinder next to one of the holes that was fired by the factory. It is very clean(no pitting , no rust ) but it is there.

I tool some pics so you guys can see it and if anyone is interested in it please message me and I will give you his info.If you need more info or pictures let me know and I will get them for you ( the shop is a 10 minute drive )

No reason not to buy the gun and shoot it, too. 19-4 models aren't rare.
How much is he asking for the gun?

Devil is in the details...IE price.
Problem with the nickel finish is once the nickel is breached it has to be refinished (Expensive) ,
After a refinish it isnt an original gun and loses collector value (shooter).

Priced right it would make a fine shooter but that breached nickel tends to get worse with time not better.

I'm of the same mind. Before they made stainless guns nickel was a better finish than blue for regular use and corrosion resistance, but many never took care of it so it didn't last. That's part of the reason that I'm not interested in it.

As far as price goes, he wants to see $1000 shipped. He may come down on that a little but you'd have to talk to him about it.

I honestly don't know what a fair price for the gun would be. Looking at GB I see similar guns selling for $750-800 in good shape that have been shot with no box, tools, or documents. But I realize the chip in the stainless hurts the value.

Why is that? Does it just rust under there and get trapped?

At $1K and with the blemish, he’s likely gonna own it for a long time.

The Nickel can be repaired. luckily its on the end of the cylinder and not the side, I do nickel plating on occasion, but havent in a while, they have small kits you could even techinically do yourself, but for the price.. umm.. kindof pricey. Here is an example of a brush plating kit. i have huge 6 gallon drums when i do it, but I could do this as well, but you dont really have to replate the whole thing which is nice, if you decide to purchase it.

Yeah, he's in a bit of a tough spot with that blemish on the nickel finish.
It will be difficult to get top dollar because of it.
It's a nice gun, though.

Value of mint one can be had for much less than he is asking. The reason it sat on GB so long is the price. FYI I got a similar 6" version in nickels while back for $575 In excellent condition. Not trying to be hurtful to your friend just realistic. They made a lot of these so it isn't rare. The box and tools are worth so etching. Maybe split it apart and he would get more but it's also more trouble

Shouldn't this gun have a silver box instead of the blue one it's shown with?

Priced right is the key. It does still have value

This one lost its collector value when the nickel flaked, thats just bad luck. So its a no win situation for a collector, refinish is not an option. The gun is still worth 750 dollars give or take for a shooter. Its an unused gun. That nickel might get worse or may not , but if it does so what for 750.00 bucks you can throw it in the river in 10 years, give it to your nephew or keep it and live with the flaking. This gun if perfect NIB in original box it would easily be worth 1200-1300 and this thread would not exist because at a grand it would be a long gone daddy.

Dash 4's can go either way. If a picture of the top of the box and label were shown I could tell you for sure. The box is not a huge bonus for this gun, the serious collector wont touch it with the flaking issue. If the gun were dead perfect new no issues, then the original serial numbered box could add 50%. People always ask how much does a box help a gun, the answer is well it depends on the gun and condition of the gun. Sometimes it helps the value very little to none and some time it could multiple the value 2 fold or better.

There is a pic of the label, no pic of the box. I assume since the person who traded it bought it new and never used it that it should be the correct box.

So one person said that he figured $750 is a fair price to ask. Anyone else want to chime in on actual value ? If nothing else the next time I go up I'd like to let him know what he gun is actually worth.

It's a $600 - $650 gun. Price it right, and it will sell.

NEXT!!!

Personally I stay away from nickel guns. i owned one once, and the nickel was defective from the Colt factory. Brought it back for refund. i think the price point is a bit high. Within the last 6 mos, i bought a 19-4 pristine blued NIB, 3T, with tools and docs for over 20% less than the gun in question. Since i will not pay for nickel, IMHO the only thing going for this piece is the fact that it is a 19, and it is not used. I would value the gun at no more than 700.00, and that might be a stretch, because I would probably look to have the cylinder renickeled, and then I have too much into a gun with no collector value

Here are some pics of my 19-4 box. It is also unfired but is 2.5". This is the box it came with, and I believe it to be correct. Please correct me if I am wrong. I have been offered slightly less than $1K for it, but turned down the offer.
