Original blue is very nice , has what appear to be original Magnas. No box or docs, just a damn nice six shooter. Is 500 a decent price?

A serial number, even with last 2 as XX would help "age" the gun. Good pictures would help gauge value. That being said, these are very common guns and $500 would be on the high side for most people. I know where there is on that looks new sitting in a pawn shop I could get for $550.

I would say $350-400 would be more reasonable for a 90% one. Someone will come along that just got one for less, but less is hard to find in most places. I have a nice one I bought for $300, but it was about 5 years ago.

Slayer, I hear what you're saying , but another factor I feel one has to consider is, how often do you see these anymore.. I haven't seen a 5" in years, nor one marked made in USA. Twelve years ago I had two 25-2s in the wood boxes that I bought for 400 and 450, but that ain't gonna happen any more....the farther we get from the point where they started putting locks on the revolvers , the fewer of these we see. I don't think prices for old guns would be nearly as high today but for that company imposed delineation, but what can you do. The good news ( which is also the bad news) is, even if high today, it wouldn't be all that long before prices catch up.......

The MADE IN USA together with the magnas makes it a likely 1946 to 1948 vintage, most probably a long-action S-prefix M&P although it could be a low C-prefix and/or have the short action already.

These aren‘t rare, but at something around 200,000 or so made, not as common as later Pre-10s or Model 10s. For condition, I don‘t do percentages, but for 500, it would have to be in very good shape. But the price is not out of bounds if you like the gun

I think you did OK for a post war, long action M&P with a 5" barrel. They don't seem as common as the 4" and 6" guns of the same era and in my opinion, the 5" version is the best balanced and most aesthetically pleasing of the service length barrels. Here is mine from late 1946. It also has the one line address and the popular LERK that was only used on the early post war guns until the parts were used up.

Alright, in that condition you did alright. 90% means blue loss on muzzle and cylinder where it has rubbed in and out of holster etc. That one looks pretty nice. Besides in another year you would have to look way hardder to find one for that.

S987939 very probably shipped in 3/48. In very high completely original condition $500 would be OK, but not a screaming good deal. I recently saw a post-WWII M&P with 5" barrel which looked great, but was lacking a SN stamp on the barrel. Meaning that the barrel had been replaced outside the factory. That made it maybe a $300-$350 shooter-grade gun.

Were they all long action?

S990184 is usually given as being the first short action M&P (made around March 1948).

I'm still wondering what LERK is.....��

I paid NZ$450, around US$300 for my ‘42 civilian 4” Victory model about 5 years ago (the exchange rate was up about US .75c at the time) and thought I got a bargain. M&P’s were selling for over NZ$700 at the time and now are sitting about $900 (US$600 today).

But bear in mind we pay a lot more down under than you guys do in the US.
